Game 30 at Florida: Pavelec Performance Tracker and Neutral Zone Play

Observations

It sure would be nice if the Jets tried to carry the puck in more. Their shots/entry total sitting at 0.51 despite controlling only 42% of their entries is insanity. How does it happen? Take a look at how efficient the Jets were when they actually controlled the puck. It’s astonishing how they can continue to promote a ‘dump and chase’ method so intensively when they have so little success when they do so.
Olli Jokinen and Devin Setoguchi were two of the biggest “dump and chase” culprits on the night. In a way I guess they are excused of this though. There is little doubt in my mind that Claude Noel demanded that style from them with Chris Thorburn as their line mate. The perception that having big bodies to chase the puck down will win you battles is a complete farce. Jokinen’s goal against the Panthers came directly off of a powerplay, without Thorburn on the ice. His two previous resulted from a lucky bounce and a carry in. This experiment isn’t “working”. It’s gotten lucky.
I thought a couple defenseman in particular had a good balance of attack in their game against the Panthers. Byfuglien of course. But also Jacob Trouba. Outside of his fall that led to the final Panthers goal, he was pretty solid defensively, and was able to jump into the play when he felt it appropriate. I can’t wait to see what this kid grows into.
I didn’t think the top line was really what it should have been against Florida. They got off to a solid start with the early goal, but after that almost disappeared. Bryan Little led the team in entries, but only 30% of them were controlled. They spent a lot of time chasing pucks down, and not nearly enough actually attacking.
On a couple occasions Grant Clitsome really had a hard time holding the line, resulting in a couple failed entries. Outside of that he was pretty much invisible on the night. I’ll take that from him, considering he’s usually the root cause of my anger defensively.
The fourth line really fourth lined it up. Nice work fellas.

Pavelec Performance

I think Pavelec was the weaker of the two goaltenders on the night. He wasn’t horrid, but he certainly was not able to step up to make a big save when the team needed him to.

Quick Explanations

Long shot, iffy angle, no traffic, I think Pavelec should have had this one.

Holy hell Enstrom almost died there. After being destroyed, the Panthers came back 3 on 2, developed a nice passing play, and got a clean look from the slot. Would have been a heck of a save for Pavelec to make, but it would have been a good time for one.

I didn’t like this rebound from Pavelec. He did pick the puck up late, but I still think that’s a pretty weak shot that needs to be held. I think a little fault has to go on Enstrom for not tying the guy up in front better, but I think he was under the impression that Pavelec would have had that.

Pavelec was just slow to react here. He lost where the puck was, got caught moving the wrong way, and was beat on the wrap around.

This was a bad break for Trouba who lost his footing and bailed. Despite Byfuglien’s beast of a slash (he’s lucky there was no injury or he could have been facing a suspension for that), Jimmy Hayes makes a nice move and puts the Panters back up by three.

Things to Watch For

(Editor’s Note: Sorry to Travis that this got up late. That Kevin McCartney guy is pretty much a hobo layabout.)

Tonight the Jets will try to keep their record on this road trip above .500 in Tampa Bay. Here are some things to watch for in tonight’s game:

What will the line up look like? Evander skated again yesterday, but will be a game time decision tonight. With his return, it’ll be interesting to see how Claude adjusts things. Will Albert sit? What about Peluso? Maybe even Tangradi? I’m hoping for Thorburn to go, but I think he played well enough in Claude’s eyes to earn him another go regardless.
Will the special teams be there? There weren’t many penalties in the game against Florida, but that would have been a solid situation to try to build some power play confidence. Instead, they will have to hope to do so against the Lightning.
How healthy is Frolik? Coming off of the flu, you would have to think Frolik will be a little drained tonight. That, combined with this being the final stop on a season long road trip, means the Jets will have to roll all four lines. It’s a scary thought, but I have some serious doubts that Frolik will be able to haul bug minutes on the third line.

Final Thought

It’s too bad to see Steven Stamkos out of the lineup. As much of a threat as he is on the ice, he is always a pleasure to watch. I guess from a Jets point of view it really is a good thing, but I have to hope for his recovery before the Olympics. This is an important game for the Jets confidence and will define how they feel about this road trip. Let’s hope they show up.
