In a game that the Jets thoroughly dominated at even strength, they were ultimately defeated due to a bad bounce, defensive lapses, and a painfully horrible penalty kill.

If we were to only look at the even strength chances in this game, this would look quite fantastic for the Jets. There would only be two players without a positive rating, neither of which going below .500. But hey, games aren’t always played entirely at even strength. The Jets gave up seven chances while short handed against a Flames power play that ranks 24th in the league. Calgary was able to get a man open in the middle of the ice on a regular basis, and made the Jets penalty kill just look horrible. It’s one thing when one aspect of your special teams is playing poorly. When both are, you’re in for some serious trouble.

Outside of the fact that the Jets lost to the Flames, the team actually looked pretty good to me on the night. I question Noel’s choice in taking Halischuk out of the lineup to play both Peluso and Thorburn (why would anyone limit talent against a team you need to beat on a back-to-back is beyond me), which could have led to James Wright looking pretty decent on the night.

You saw the good and the bad of the Clitsome-Byfuglien pairing Monday night. Sure, they were on the ice for a plethora of chances for. In fact, they usually are a very strong pairing when it comes to creating offense. The problem is they simply are not strong enough defensively together for it to be of any benefit. I just can’t bring myself to love this pairing. You’re defensemen. Defense first.

If Blake Wheeler can keep playing at the level he has been lately, this goal-scoring slump is not going to last long. He’s been flying all over the ice, using his body, and creating chances.

Is anybody really surprised at how well Keaton Ellerby looks right now? He’s playing with Toby Enstrom for goodness sakes.

I didn’t think Zach Redmond looked nearly as out of place as he did on Sunday night. Obviously he wasn’t facing the same degree of talent against the Flames, but he needs to raise his bar going forward if he wants to stick around when Trouba gets healthy.

I honestly don’t remember hearing much about Mark Scheifele outside of him deflecting the puck that led to the fourth goal against the Jets. I get that he is a third line guy, but he needs to show that he can step up against teams like Calgary. Especially in games where the Jets dominate like they did.

Please take a moment to look at the numbers from the second line. Eventually Devin Setoguchi is going to be able to put the puck in the net, and like almost every other scorer in the league, Kane is in a slump right now that he will eventually explode out of. Let’s hope that happens Thursday night against Chicago.

Listen. All the stats are great. The Jets ultimately controlled this game and probably deserved a win. Blame the loss on whatever you want, whether it be the refs (don’t like that excuse), bad breaks, etc. The fact of the matter is the Jets should have won this game, and need to capitalize on their chances. It’s over now though, so there is nothing left to do but move on and look forward to the (tough) week ahead.
