Game 23 Vs. Calgary: Montoya and Entries

Well, I guess we all know what Detroit felt like about a week ago. It’s not a very nice feeling is it?

Observations

Although the Flames entered the zone with control at a slightly higher percentage, I have to the neutral zone edge to the Jets. They had the higher overall number, more shots per entry, and way fewer fails.
Still not too impressed with the quantity of shots generated off of offensive zone faces-offs by the Jets. Even if they aren’t winning those draws, they need to find a way to create pressure and force turnovers in those situations. Taking an icing against this team is almost not a problem for most opponents.
Can we take a minute and pay some respects to the numbers put up by Evander Kane and Devin Setoguchi in this game? They are quite impressive, and if you take a look at my scoring chance article you’ll see the benefits of having such a strong neutral zone presence.
What the Thorburn? It’s amazing what one entry with sustained pressure can do for the guy. Too bad it happens so rarely.
Mark Scheifele went complete ghost mode in this game. He didn’t do much defensively, wasn’t noticeable at all offensively, and well…you can see how well he did in terms of getting the puck down the ice.
Honestly, outside of that second line there really is not much when it comes to impressive numbers from the Jets here. Yes, Bryan Little had a high quantity of controlled entries but as a whole he wasn’t able to create much off of them. Andrew Ladd did a little better, but it was not at the standard of play they have set for themselves. I would expect that to get better, but it’s unfortunate considering the opponent.

Montoya Performance

Despite the fact that I didn’t see many of the goals against Montoya as his fault, I get the feeling we won’t be seeing him again for a while. I thought he had a decent game, making some tough saves and bailed the Jets out of a few bad decisions. Ultimately though the four goals against is what will ultimately matter and until Pavelec starts to struggle again, Monty will ride the pine.

Quick Explanations

The Jets penalty kill was anything but spectacular Monday night, and this goal was just the start of its problems. For some reason Buff tries to go all Ron Hainsey on us and drops to his knees, it doesn’t work, and Mike Cammalleri continues to increase his stock on the trade market.

Uhh…what? This was a crazy goal. After deflecting off of Frolik’s stick, the puck flutters perfectly up over Montoya, and perfectly into the net.

This goal just made me angry. That was textbook interference from Bouma, to the point where the guy in the cowboy hat saw it, but the ref did not. As is life in the NHL.

This one is on Montoya. He bites ridiculously hard on Hudler’s first fake, falls over, and never recovers. Yikes.

Things to Watch For

No big deal here. Take the positives from this game and bring a great effort to beat the Chi… Crap. The Jets really needed this game when you look at the two teams they play next. Here are some things to watch for heading into Thursday night’s match-up:

THE HELMET PARDY. In case you haven’t heard, Jets fans were planning on retaliating against the drunken helmet grab by wearing their own helmets to Thursday’s game. Unforunately, the team and Mark Chipman have ended a fun and silly celebration before it started by banning helmets at the game.
Will Evander break his slump? Evander took a step forward in his play on Monday, and is overdue for a goal. Will he get one? I sure hope so. The Jets will need him to score.
Can the penalty kill get it together? Please? Things are going to go downhill fast if it keeps giving up the chances it has been.

Final Thought

Thursday night provides the Jets with another opportunity to try to improve their horrid divisional record. Regardless of the poor performances they have put together against the Blackhawks to this point, they need to move past them and put in a complete effort Thursday. This is the NHL. Anybody can beat anybody. It’s about time that worked in the favour of the Jets.
