2019.R1.G6 Jets Playoff Flight Plan: Looking To Live On In St. Louis

Do or die. Now or never. Insert whatever cliche you’d like into tonight’s game. The Winnipeg Jets either win tonight and force a game seven in what has been an entertaining series full of great highs and crushing lows, or the season’s end comes early with us wondering just where it all went wrong and way too much time to contemplate it all.

I’d like to see more Jets hockey after tonight myself and at this point, what else are we going to do but #BelieveInTheJets?

Things started off so well in the first period with the Jets striking out to a quick 2-0 lead, but as the game wore on you could see the home side fade out while the St. Louis Blues continued to be relentless and in the end scored three third period goals – the game winner coming with 15 seconds left – to take game five and a 3-2 series lead.

Fun fact…

No seven game series in NHL history has ever had the first six games won by the visiting team. In a playoff where both of the top seeds have been eliminated in the first round for the first time ever, tonight seems like a good night for the Jets to help make a little more. For what it’s worth teams that won game five after the series tied at 2-1, have a record of 205-55 (78.8% winning) but the Jets are unbeaten in five games this season in St. Louis (both regular season and playoffs) and even more remarkable are 9-0 over the last two seasons in games officiated by tonight’s ref, Francois St. Laurent.

What The Jets Need To Win Game Six…

Get a lead
For the love of everything hockey, keep playing their when they get it. This includes Paul Maurice rolling all four lines instead of shortening his bench, something others have taken notice he’s done which defies all logic really.
Special teams needs to be on top of it’s game tonight. The Jets have been out-scoring the Blues in 5v5 play, but the Blues power play has been a thorn in the side of the Jets.

#26 – Blake Wheeler (Right Wing)

If the Jets are going to force a game seven, they are going to need the Captain to lead the way and the top line to be the best line in game six. They weren’t in game five and part of that can be attributed to line usage by the coach and perhaps some over-playing down the stretch in the third period. As top line also makes up three/fifths of the power play unit, the Jets maybe need them to be better in that area even more than they need to be at even-strength.

What The Blues Need To Win Game Six…

Getting out to a better start and maybe even getting a lead would probably be ideal, but two of the three wins they’ve had this series have been of the comeback variety so maybe it doesn’t matter? In any case, if they do fall behind again, staying resilient is key.
Keep working the slot area in front of Hellebuyck. The weak-point of the Jets defense would seem to be attacking the middle of the ice so carry the puck in and then cut to the middle or get the puck to someone who has found an opening there.

#50 – Jordan Binnington (Goalie)

Regardless of what team you’re cheering for, the story of Jordan Binnington this season has been quite remarkable. Before this season started, almost nobody was talking about the 25 year old goalie as being a part of the Blues let alone one the key parts of a possible playoff series victory, but here we are with the Blues – who if you hadn’t heard were 31st in the NHL back on December 31, 2018 – one win away pulling off such a feat and it’s largely thanks to their rookie goalie who has been anything but nervous.
