Seeking some reinforcements on defense, the @Winnipeg Jets have claimed @Luca Sbisa off of waivers on Tuesday morning. The 29 year old defenseman was about to sign a one-year, one-way contract with the @Anaheim Ducks worth $750,000, but needed to clear waivers in order to do so. The Jets used the opportunity to snap up the 11 year NHL veteran.
It’s unclear at the moment if this is a depth move for the Manitoba Moose who are currently dealing with some injuries of their own on the blue-line and could use the addition, or if this is a move for the main NHL roster. When he was signed by the Ducks, it was speculated by multiple sites that it was a signing more meant to help out the AHL San Diego Gulls
From several sources, it has been reported the Sbisa is nothing more than a depth signing for Kevin Dineen and the struggling San Diego Gulls. After dropping their first four games, the team could use a seasoned two-way defenseman after the Anaheim Ducks and free agency depleted their roster.
The Moose could certainly qualify as struggling as well having started the season 1-5-0 and last in the AHL’s Central Division. They’ve also seen injuries to @Sami Niku (who by all rights should be in the NHL anyway) as well as @Logan Stanley. If the Jets do in fact want him in the AHL, they would have to put him on waivers yet again and hope he clears.
The Jets have also had their share of injuries so this more likely could be a move to put a warm extra body in the press box.
Or… The Jets can do what they’ve done with the likes of @Anthony Bitetto and @Mark Letestu and give him a regular spot in the lineup. *sigh*
It would certainly seem odd if the Jets intended to give him a role on the defense for any length of time given how he hasn’t been able to really make any other NHL roster. Sbisa has played in just 39 games over the last two seasons, the last was a nine game stint with the New York Islanders last season.
