With the official announcement that hometown hero Jonathan Toews will sign with the Winnipeg Jets on July 1, fans across Winnipeg — and hockey fans worldwide — are buzzing. “Captain Serious” is attempting an NHL return, and while emotions are high, there’s one key question on everyone’s mind:
Where does he fit in this lineup?
Let’s flash back to last season. One of the Jets’ glaring issues was faceoffs — particularly in the second-line centre spot. Vladislav Namestnikov posted a 46.1% win rate in the dot during the 2024–25 season. While Namestnikov has never been dominant in the circle, that’s not an excuse. In today’s NHL, winning key draws — especially in your own zone or on the power play — matters more than ever. And too often, the Jets fell short in that area.
Jonathan Toews could be the answer
Now, I’m not suggesting we toss Toews directly into the 2C role on opening night. That would be unrealistic. He hasn’t played an NHL game in over two years, and the league has only gotten faster and more demanding. “Baby steps” should be the plan.
To start, I’d slot Toews in as the fourth-line centre, logging around 10–15 minutes a night, and monitor his pace, stamina, and impact on draws. This isn’t about doubting Toews — we know what he’s capable of — it’s about making sure he’s eased in the right way.
If things go according to plan, I could see him moving up to a third-line centre role, which lines up nicely given that Adam Lowry is expected to miss time at the start of the season recovering from hip surgery. That would open a spot alongside Nino Niederreiter and potentially Mason Appleton (if he re-signs), giving Toews a great opportunity to step into a depth role with experienced linemates.
Should the Jets give him a bigger role?
Now, let’s envision this:
Lowry returns, Toews is keeping pace, and suddenly, the Jets have a serious option to slot him into the 2C role, bumping Namestnikov either to the wing or the fourth line.
Should they try it?
Absolutely.
With a player as skilled, experienced, and hockey-smart as Toews, it’s worth experimenting. And if it doesn’t work, that’s fine. But the worst outcome would be not trying it at all.
The signing itself is already an incredible story — a Winnipeg legend returning home. But if he can adapt to today’s game and truly help this team down the middle, we’re not just witnessing a return…
We’re witnessing the comeback of the greatest athlete Winnipeg has ever produced.
