Wayne Simmonds is the type of player that fans of rough and gritty (style, not the mascot) hockey enjoy and over the last five seasons he’s been a pretty consistent point producer as well. In his career he’s topped the 25+ goal mark in five seasons and was a goal short of making it six last season.
But it’s that last season combined with this season where his production has dropped off some, combined with his age of 30 years old and his pending UFA status this summer that has made him somewhat expendable in Philadelphia. His name has come up a few times in trade rumors with the Jets and today as we continue to go through the pile of trades you all sent us to look over, we mull over a couple of options for the Wayne Train as well as one trade involving Brandon Tanev that caught my eye at least…
Josh: 4.5/10 – Depending who the prospects are I would consider it.
Cassie: 5/10 – Really depends on the players.
Zee: 4/10 – My initial thought was this needs to be fleshed out a little more, it’s intriguing. But the more I think about it, I’m not really sure if Simmond’s game is what Winnipeg needs.
Sean: 5/10 – I think Simmonds is overvalued at the moment. Has not been good for Philadelphia this season and seems to slow the pace of play. That said I wouldn’t hate him as a puck retrieval and net front presence playing with Patrik Laine.
Eric M: 4/10 – This one is in the details and we don’t have them.
Art: 2/10 – Pass on Simmonds outright. There are better options and the Jets have enough depth guys on the wings. If they make a move – especially in a deal that involves the 1st rounder and more, it needs to be for a legit top six forward.
Josh: 2/10 – Useless trade.
Cassie: 3/10 – This isn’t it chief.
Zee: 0/10 – Hard NOPE on this. Do not want a Bertuzzi Jets jersey to even exist. Ever.
Sean: I will play Devils advocate here. I think Tanev’s time with Winnipeg is coming to an end. He has been great this year and with the money required elsewhere, he may be playing himself out of Winnipeg. I don’t hate trading Tanev but not sure Bertuzzi is the one who takes his spot.
Eric M: 1/10 – Tanev is probably playing himself out of Winnipeg but I’m just gonna hope he takes a smaller check to stay. I love his game so much. If he stays, I think I’ll be getting a Tanev sweater.
Art: 9/10 – I’m not gonna lie, I’m very intrigued by this deal. I fully admit I haven’t seen that much of Bertuzzi this season but in talking to some Red Wings fans and followers, he’s been a very plesent surprise for them – much like Best Tanev has been for us in Winnipeg. I don’t think this is a deal the Wings do straight up, the Jets would have to sweeten the pot a bit, but the truth is I think this is Tanev’s last season in Winnipeg as he’s a UFA this summer and I really can’t see the Jets signing him to anything over three million a season and if he takes less than that I’d have to question Brandon’s sanity.
Comrie and a 1st for Simmonds. #GoJetsGo
Josh: 8/10 – I don’t think Philly needs anymore goalies, but if they would do this I know I would definitely say yes.
Cassie: 7/10 – This depends on if Philly needs more goalies.
Zee: 4/10 – Nah, but I do like the idea of throwing more goalies at Philly, at this point it’s just funny.
Sean: 6/10 – Don’t love it don’t hate it. Not sure the Jets are in a position to get rid of a goalie but the price isn’t terrible for a guy that may help your playoff run.
Eric M: 2/10 – I’d like to hold goalies, see if Comrie develops like Bucky and Brossoit have in the system and with their dedicated coach.
Art: 1.5/10 – I do think the Jets should look for a trade partner for Comrie, especially with Mikhail Berdin coming in hot and the Jets stuck with Hellebuyck for the next five seasons, but I also think you could get a lot more for Comrie this summer. The only reason you don’t trade Comrie is because you can get him re-signed for under two million a season and you’re assuming Laurent Brossoit will be getting more dollars as a full time NHL starter somewhere else next season.
