After 26 days without a win, the Winnipeg Jets finally snapped their 11-game losing skid Friday night with a 5-1 win over the L.A. Kings at Canada Life Centre, in front of a supportive and energetic crowd.
Vladislav Namestnikov (7) opened the scoring, Cole Koepke (3) made it 2-0 heading into the first intermission, and Jonathan Toews (4) pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second period. Quinton Byfield (7) got L.A. on the board midway through the frame, but Mark Scheifele struck twice in the final 10 minutes of the period, his 21st and 22nd of the season, to make it 5-1. There was no scoring in the third, as the Jets improved to 16-22-5 behind a 23-save performance from Eric Comrie.

Monkey off their backs

The Jets got the monkey off their backs with their first win in 12 games, snapping a franchise-record 11-game losing streak. The breakthrough also came with plenty of help from the fans.
“A lot of fan bases would turn on their team after what we’ve gone through lately, but they’ve stayed right with us the whole time,” Comrie said postgame. “It’s been special to see that. They are the best fans in the NHL for a reason.”

Goalless droughts snapped

Namestnikov was a scratch Thursday night against the Edmonton Oilers but drew back into the lineup Friday in place of the injured Morgan Barron. Just 1:31 into the first period, he scored his first goal since Nov. 1, redirecting a Logan Stanley point shot past Darcy Kuemper for his seventh of the season.
“I’m the first to admit I wasn’t the best in those games,” Namestnikov told Kevin Sawyer during the first intermission. “I just got to be better. Today’s a new day, new start. I just got to go out there and be better.”
Then, 2:07 into the second period, Toews added to the list of droughts snapped, scoring his first goal since Nov. 11 by tapping in his own rebound to make it 3-0.

Scheifele scores twice

Scheifele reclaimed the team lead in goals with a pair in the middle frame. His first came on the power play at 12:35, when his pass out front deflected off Byfield and past Kuemper. He added his second on an odd-man rush at 19:17, converting a feed from Cole Perfetti to make it 5-1 after 40 minutes.
Winnipeg will look to build off its first win in a while Sunday afternoon when the struggling New Jersey Devils come to town. Puck drop is set for 1:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
