The Jets failed yet again to end their long losing streak on Thursday night, losing 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers. Despite leading 3-1, the Jets couldn’t hold on to their 1st period lead. Tonight, the Jets played their third of five straight home games. Canada Life Centre was again the host for tonight’s game, as the Jets looked to finally end their 11 game losing streak (0-7-4). The now 15-22-5 Jets took on the 18-14-10 Kings, with both teams looking to go into the weekend with 2 more points.
There were a few small changes to the Jets lineup tonight. Gabriel Vilardi stayed on line 2, playing alongside Jonathan Toews and Cole Perfetti. Alex Iafallo was still on line 1, and Vladislav Namestnikov moved up on line 3. Danny Zhilkin played in his 2nd career NHL game and Colin Miller took Neal Pionk’s place on the 2nd defense pairing. The Jets 3rd pairing tonight was Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn.
Eric Comrie got the start in goal for this 2nd game of a back to back, as Comrie continues to get some starts when needed. The Jets lineup continues to be almost healthy and injury free except for Haydn Fleury. Neal Pionk and Morgan Barron were also added to the injury report today, with both listed as “day-to-day”. Comrie entered tonight’s game with a 6-9-1 record, a 3.49 GAA and a below average .879 SV%. The Jets got goal contributions from each of their four forward lines tonight, and after 11 winless games, Winnipeg finally has their 16th win of the 2025-26 season.
1st Period
Tonight’s game started in favour of the Jets, who got the first few scoring chances. Nino Niederreiter passed the puck back to Logan Stanley at the point. Stanley fired a shot on goal, and Vladislav Namestnikov deflected the puck past Darcy Kuemper to give the Jets a 1-0 lead just 91 seconds in. Namestnikov’s 7th of the season was his first goal since November 1st, and his first goal in almost 30 games.
After this opening goal the Kings pushed back with some chances of their own. 10 minutes in, the shots on goal were just 3-3, and you began to get the feeling that this might (it wasn’t) be a low scoring game with the Kings defensive play style. The 28th ranked Kings powerplay got their first opportunity after Kyle Connor was called for tripping at 11:28. Drew Doughty hit the post at the end of the powerplay, but the game remained 1-0 Jets.
The Jets pushed back after the penalty kill, and earned their first powerplay of the night after a Kevin Fiala holding call with around 5 minutes left. The 5 on 4 was unsuccessful, but a few minutes later the Jets extended their lead. Tanner Pearson found Dylan Samberg near the point, and Samberg made a nice fake shot (and then pass) across to Cole Koepke, who fired a snap shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Jets.
It was an all-around positive opening period for the Jets, who led 2-0 and were outshooting the Kings 9-5. The Jets had a good opening period against the Oilers too (before losing), so it would now be up to the Jets to have a strong 60 minute game.
2nd Period
The 2nd period was another strong start for the Jets. Cole Perfetti set up Colin Miller in the middle of the point and he fired a shot on goal. Jonathan Toews was in the right place in front of the goal (almost in the crease), and while avoiding Kuemper the puck was put home by Toews to make it 3-0 Jets.
Toews’ 4th of the season was his first goal since November 11th (over 25 games ago) and it kept the Jets momentum going. Tonight the depth scoring was there for the Jets, as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines contributed a goal each towards this 3-0 lead.
7 minutes later, Warren Foegele and Taylor Ward set up Quinton Byfield in front for a deflection which went past Eric Comrie. Scott Arniel quickly challenged the goal, as the puck deflected off Byfield’s foot inside the crease (with Samberg moving Byfield back), but the call stood and it was now 3-1 Jets.
The unsuccessful challenge resulted in a delay of game penalty, giving the Kings another powerplay opportunity. With time running down in the powerplay, Adrian Kempe took a high-sticking penalty. After a short 4 on 4, the Jets got a powerplay and capitalized to re-gain their 3 goal lead. This time it was the 1st line getting on the scoresheet, with Vilardi and Connor setting up Mark Scheifele for his 21st of the season off a wrister from in close which deflected off a Kings’ defender.
After this goal the Jets continued to push for more scoring chances, and it sure looked like tonight would be the night the losing streak would come to an end. Comrie made a pair of nice saves near the end of the 2nd, and the Jets would soon after make it a 5-1 lead before the end of the 2nd. Toews made a nice play to start the Jets rush, before Vilardi and Cole Perfetti set up Mark Scheifele for a slapper which was well placed in the back of the net.
The Jets were now outshooting the Kings 16-12, and the vibes were all positive inside Canada Life Centre heading into the final 20 minutes.
3rd Period
The 3rd period was a good push back from the Kings, who were outshooting the Jets 8-2 in the 3rd with 7 minutes to play. Comrie stood tall in net, and still with a 4 goal lead, you could tell the Jets were just trying to end this game with a strong final few minutes. Logan Stanley took the 1st penalty of the 3rd with 7 minutes remaining, but the Jets had another successful penalty kill.
The final 5 minutes of this game went without any more goals and penalties. After 11 straight losses, the Winnipeg Jets deservingly won a hockey game. Final score from Canada Life Centre was 5-1 Jets, who got slightly outshot 24-19. Tonight was a total team performance, and you could tell that the players were pleased to end this losing streak with a big home win.
