Every Saturday we’re going to take a topic relevant to the Winnipeg Jets and / or to hockey in general and ask you – loyal readers of JetsNaton to let us know what you think… There are no right or wrong answers, but we ask that you make your ‘takes’ hot and be respectful of others opinions.
This is the internet after all, the last bastion of civilized, well thought out discourse.
This week: The “TRUE NORTH” shout-out during the Canadian anthem.
Little known fact: By law, you have to type out the words true north in all capitals when directly referencing it to it’s usage during the anthem at Jets or Moose games.
Everyone knows (or pretty much knows) the origin story to the shout out. It was done as a gesture by the fans to the group that helped bring NHL hockey back to Winnipeg and has stuck ever since even as many have started to wonder if that organization is truly committed to putting a winning hockey team on the ice in Winnipeg.
Its use at games is contentious enough, but the celebratory cheer that happens directly after the shout-out as the anthem continues on also draw ire from other fans.
And every so often a “TRUE NORTH” shout is heard outside the walls of the MTSC…
We also have reports of such shouting activity at Blue Bombers and Goldeyes games during the summer… Is that even worse? Are Jets fans simply calling out to each other?
Is it force of habit? Given how poorly the Jets have been the last couple of seasons, does it need to stop altogether? Is it just harmless fun and something many other fan bases in other cities do? (STARS in Dallas, RED in Washington and BLUES instead of BRAVE in St. Louis are just a few more well known examples.)
