PLAYER’S SEASON IN REVIEW
Shawn Mattias played a grand total of seven games in the calendar year of 2018 and that’s all you really need to know about how his season went for the Winnipeg Jets.
The Jets signed him back on July 1 of 2016 in an effort to solidify their bottom six forward group and help add much needed depth and while he had some decent numbers in the 16-17 season (45 games played, eight goals, 12 points) his 2017-18 season was a dud. Despite playing some solid minutes (around 13 to 15 minutes per game) in 11 games played in October and another 6 in November, he only managed a grand total of two assists. To be fair, his role was more that of a checking forward but even in that department he struggled.
With the emergence of players like Kyle Connor and Jack Roslovic, it made him an even more expendable player as noted by the openness the Jets – a team notorious for keeping their proverbial cards close to the chest and not willing to let any possible trade rumors slip out – were by mid-December willing to trade Matthias.
Matthias though continued to be somewhat of a regular in the Jets lineup until January 12 when he was placed on the IR with an upper body injury. He was finally cleared two months later in March, but by then the Jets had already established their roster going into the playoffs with the addition of Paul Stastny.
THE PLAYOFFS
Matthias didn’t see any action in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
FUTURE OUTLOOK
If Shawn Matthias has a future in the NHL, it won’t be with the Winnipeg Jets who already had players more than capable of replacing him at the mid point of this past season.
