With the Winnipeg Jets enjoying some time off before the all-star break, you’d maybe expect to not hear much from the players over the next seven days save for Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele who will be taking part in the All-Star game this coming weekend. You’ll also be seeing of and hearing a little bit from Jets head coach Paul Maurice as well as the Jets record at the cut off point of the season was good enough to put Maurice into his first NHL All-Star game as a head coach of the Central Division team.
On Monday, Paul spent a few minutes with CBS Radio’s Jim Rome to talk about a handful of different topics including:
The Jets season thus far and how the team feels going into the all-star break…
“We’re pleased with where we’re at right now because the Central division is tough hockey, it’s hard to survive from a health point of view, but we still got a long way to go. We think we’re capable for contending for a Cup, but we don’t think we’re their yet.”
Paul Maurice’s initial leap into coaching at the age of 21 even if he wasn’t fully prepared to accept it…
“My dad asked me that question about three years early, probably because he had seen me play, he said ‘did you ever have any interest in coaching?’ and I was so insulted by that right? ‘Why would I coach? I’m gonna play twenty years in the NHL man, you’re crazy’ and it turns out he was right.”
As well, he goes over the struggles Patrik Laine has gone into over the last month, Brendan Shanahan as a player (??) and what life is like in Winnipeg. The interview starts at about the 13 minute mark and runs for about 11 minutes. It’s well worth a listen just to hear a relaxed and engaged Paul Maurice.
