It’s like I’ve always said. You may be able to beat the Dallas Stars nine out of ten times, but you simply can’t do it ten out of eleven. It’s impossible.
The Winnipeg Jets proved that by looking bad early and often as the Stars coasted to a 5-1 win.

TALKING POINTS

  • Brandon Tanev has shortcomings in his game, but man if he isn’t fun to watch. Would have liked to have seen that short handed goal count – could have changed the entire game – but I can also see why it didn’t as there was far too much contact with Stars goalie Ben Bishop.
  • The Jets actually had an edge on 5 v 5 play against the Stars in the first period (shot attempts were 19-14 in favor of Winnipeg), but it was special teams that hurt the Jets. Ben Chiarot and Blake Wheeler took early penalties to get the Stars rolling and Alexander Radulov opened scoring while Tyler Seguin added a second goal on the power play.
  • Stupid dangerous play by Dustin Byfuglien at the end of the first period. It can be argued that any other player with less strength than Buff doing what he did wouldn’t have caused such a violent hit from behind in what seemed to be a routine scrum. Still, no excuses, it was a dumb move on his part, he’s lucky he wasn’t gone for more than two minutes and we’re not unconvinced he won’t hear from the league later on about it.
  • Kyle Connor is a gift. His 20 seconds or so of dangles around the Stars end of the ice with the puck was even more beautiful than the actual snipe.
  • The Jets get into these loops right now where they are good at keeping the Stars to the outer edge of the zone, but are horrible at puck retrieval which leads the Stars to just carry the puck endlessly in the Jets end of the ice as they look for an open shot which they eventually get. Winnipeg needs to get better with getting the puck back when the other team looks to attack.
  • Ditto that for what they do on the offensive end. Tonight especially felt like too many cases of the Jets being one and done with scoring chances.
  • Jamie Benn on both of his power play goals was just more of what is so very wrong with the Stars penalty kill at the moment.
  • The Stars couldn’t stop taking bad penalties in this game. It was like watching the Jets from a few years ago where they would repeatedly commit dumb stick fouls and then go brain dead the moment they started play short handed.
  • It’s a minor miracle the Stars didn’t get 40+ shots in the game because with about four minutes left in the second period they had 30. The Jets did tighten up a bit on the defensive end in the third period, but by then the damage was done.
