After going through a bit of a murder’s row of tough opponents over the last eight game and doing fairly well with a 5-3 record, the Jets now get a bit of a reprieve in hitting the road on the west coast to play the Kings tonight and the Anaheim Ducks in a couple of days. Both So-Cal teams have struggled this season and are pretty much playing out the string with an eye towards next year.

Kings Player To Watch

#51 Austin Wagner – Left Wing

Not a lot has gone right for the Los Angeles Kings this season with all the injuries and sup-par play, but rookie Austin Wagner has been a bright light for Kings fans on a rather dim season. The 21 year old former Regina Pat has tremendous speed and despite a few ups-and-downs with the club this season – he was a healthy scratch in mid-Janurary for a handful of games along with an injury that kept him out of the lineup for three games recently – he seems like the kind of player the Kings can lean on in a rebuild should they go that route this summer.

Last Kings Game

The Kings battled back and forth with the Panthers, trading goals and leads throughout the game until Jonathan Huberdeau scored with 1:56 in the game to give Florida the win and the Kings their 15th loss in their last 17 games.

Kings Notebook

  • The Kings have a total of 235 man games lost to injury this season. Dustin Brown, Alec Martinez, Trevor Lewis, Ilya Kovalchuk and Jonathan Quick have all lost more than ten games each.
  • The Kings are 16-7-8 all time versus the Thrasher/Jets franchise including a 10-1-4 record at home. The last game between these two teams was December 18 in LA with the Kings earning a 4-1 win.
  • Jeff Carter registered his 700th career point over the weekend against the Panthers.

Jets Player To Watch

#8 Jacob Trouba – Defense

You might not realize it, but Jacob Trouba has had a near career year this season.
His six goals and 39 points this season have him sixth on team scoring and number one for Jets defensemen. Granted that last part has been helped somewhat by injuries to Dustin Byfuglien and Josh Morrissey, but the fact remains that Trouba has been a steady presence on the blue line for Winnipeg this season and even with his occasional puck carrying mistakes, he’s been paired with a brand new partner in Nathan Beaulieu since Morrissey’s injury and when you consider that neither man before Beaulieu’s debut on February 26 had played together on the same team let alone being paired up together, Trouba again has adjusted well to a sub-optimal situation in the lineup that directly involves him.
Something he’s had experience at for some time now really.

Last Jets Game

The Jets finally topped the Flames in their third and final try, but it wasn’t without some severe nail-biting at the end as a lack-lustre third period meant Connor Hellebuyck had to be sharp to preserve a 2-1 victory over the Pacific division leaders.

Jets Notebook

  • The Jets are 13-5-2 against Pacific Division opponents this season and have won eight of their past 12 games against the Pacific Division.
  • Winnipeg is 18-16-0 on the road this season and play seven of their last 11 games in the regular season on the road. They also haven’t won two road games in a row in the calendar year of 2019.
  • Blake Wheeler had an assist on Saturday to extend his point streak to three games (1G, 3A). He’s two assists away from matching Marc Savard’s franchise record for assists in a season with 69.
  • Mark Scheifele scored in the final minute of the first period on Saturday… It was his 11th goal in the last five minutes of a period or overtime, which is tied with Patrik Laine for the team lead.
  • Connor Hellebuyck’s 30th win on Saturday made him the only goalie in Thrasher/Jets history to record 30 win seasons in two consecutive seasons.
