JNGD.S8.G71 Flight Plan: Jets Look To Cool Down Red Hot Flames
alt
Art Middleton
Mar 16, 2019, 13:00 EDT
The Jets haven’t exactly had good fortune going up against division leaders lately. They’ve lost recent matches to leaders from the Metropolitan division as well as Atlantic division and tonight they take on the leaders of the Pacific who have already beaten the Jets twice this season. The good news is that the Jets are catching Calgary on the second game of a back-to-back swing and the Flames haven’t exactly handled those well this season.

Flames Player To Watch

#19- Matthew Tkachuk – Left Wing

Son-of-Keith has been a regular chip off the ‘ol block as he’s piled up the points in his third pro year setting career highs in goals (32) and points (79) with a few more weeks of the regular season left to play. He’s an annoyingly great (grate?) combination of skill, decent size and a shit-disturber’s mentality that has always wore down his opponents, but some of that is based more on his reputation from his first season where he picked up 100+ penalty minutes. Since then he’s toned down the agitation side of his play as his own skill is far to valuable to the Flames to take off the ice, a point that has been proven this past week as he had a four point night on Sunday against the Golden Knights and a five point night against the Rangers last night.

Flames Last Game

The Flames extended their win streak to three games as a couple of goals early in the second period broke open a rather close game and helped Calgary coast to a 5-1 win over the New York Rangers.

Flames Notebook

  • The Flames are 25-13-3 against Western conference teams this season. This of course includes a 2-0-0 mark against the Jets as they’ve beaten Winnipeg both on Nov 21 by a 6-3 score, and then a month later beat the Jets 4-1 in Winnipeg.
  • The Calgary Flames can clinch a playoff spot tonight with a win over the Jets, or they can still clinch if the Minnesota Wild lose to the Rangers at home.
  • This game is the ninth of ten times the Flames will play back-to-back games this season. They are 4-4-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.
  • From our friends over at FlamesNation: Quips and Quotes: Flames beat Rangers 5-1

Jets Player to Watch

#29 – Patrik Laine – Right Wing

Suddenly Patty’s a passer! He hasn’t exactly been setting the hockey world on fire with his goal scoring – though twice in the Jets last game against the Bruins he found iron behind Tuukka Rask – but he has been showing off his passing prowess with assists in six of his last eight games played including a pair of really nice passes during that Bruins game.

Last Jets Game

The score would likely suggest the game was closer than it really was as the Jets put together a solid sixty minute effort and rebounded from a crushing loss to San Jose by putting away a pesky Bruins side by a 4-3 score.

Jets Notebook

  • The Jets “magic number” to clinch a playoff spot is 11 points, meaning a combination of points earned by the Jets or points lost by the first team not in a playoff position would go towards helping earn a second straight playoff berth.
  • The Jets are 12-5-2 against Pacific Division opponents this season and have won seven of the past 11 games against the Pacific Division.
  • The home team has won nine of the last 12 games between the Jets and Flames.
  • Blake Wheeler has scored 20 goals or more in six consecutive seasons, but it’s his passing that continues to impress as he has 66 which is second in the NHL. He needs two assists to match the 68 assists he had last season, which was one shy of Marc Savard’s franchise record of 69 assists in a season.
