JNGD.PRE-1 Recap: Devils Too Much For Jets In 5-3 Loss

Well thank goodness that’s done with. The Jets ended their pre-season schedule on a bit of a weak note losing their second game in as many nights, this time at home to the New Jersey Devils.
The loss puts the Jets seven game record at a meddling 4-3-0 and there still remains some questions on the state of backup goaltending, defense (six of the seven games saw the Jets give up three or more goals) as well as just how the middle six forward group is going to come together. Cuts are expected to be made on Friday as the team now begins to prepare for the start of the season a little under a week away in St. Louis.

SCORING SUMMARY

HIGHLIGHTS

First Period

The first ten minutes or so are a bit of a feeling out process for both clubs, but Mathieu Perreauly opens scoring with some nifty play behind the Devils net while on the power play. The goal comes seconds after the penalty expires however. A little over a minute later the Devils strike back for two quick goals in the span of 50 seconds with Andy Green and Kyle Palmieri scoring to give jersey the two goal lead. In both cases, the goals come as a result of cross ice passes that the Jets defended very well last season, but have struggled against in this pre-season.

Second Period

The Devils scored early in the second, catching the Jets flat footed on defense yet again and with another cross ice pass (a beauty one at that from Taylor Hall) and gained a two goal lead. From there though the period mostly belonged to the Jets. Kyle Connor scored midway through the period to get them back within one and the team had multiple chances in the second half of the frame to even things up, but ran into a strong performance from Devils goalie Keith Kinkaid.

Third Period

As good as the Jets were in the second, the Devils were in the third as yet another quick goal to open the period – 17 seconds in fact – put the Jets on their heels. Skyler Mckenzie scored a textbook deflection goal off a Joe Morrow shot to cut the lead down to one goal again, but the Devils simply were too good in their own end and iced the game away when Damon Severson scored to make the final 5-3.

JN PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Kyle Connor – Not much for the Jets to glow about in this one, but the speed of KC and his stick-handling look to be in mid-season form. Scored a nice goal in the second.
For New Jersey: Taylor Hall – A pair of assists and you can just see how much his presence means to the Devils. Seemingly looked like a threat to score or create scoring every time he had the puck.
