The Winnipeg Jets winning streak extends to four games with a win over New Jersey tonight.
Patrik Laine’s point streak is extended to nine games with another goal.
Ben Chirot has a five game point streak with an assist in tonight’s game.
Taylor Hall’s point streak though? Buh-bye. It’s over.
TALKING POINTS
- Ugly wins are still wins and still count the same in the standings, but man that was kinda ugly. The Jets were out-shot 18-5 in the third period and if not for the work of Connor Hellebuyck, this would have been an ugly result.
- Any doubts or questions that Dustin Byfuglien had lost a step in his game or wasn’t playing to the level we typically see him play at should be all gone after a night like tonight. He made three very strong defensive plays to break up odd-man rushes. His hit of Taylor Hall as you’ll see below was textbook “play the man” defense and should be on every how-to video from here until the end of time. He’s also still chipping in with offense with an assist and had a couple of great chances to score that were thwarted by Devils goalie Corey Schneider.
- Patrik Laine only had one goal tonight. I think this is officially a “slump” for him.
- Also to be filed under the category of “ugly, but good enough” is the Jets penalty kill which was a perfect four for four kill wise, but it wasn’t pretty and it gave up far too many shots and second chances.
- Joel Armia always seems to do something neat against the Devils doesn’t he?
- Connor Hellebuyck by the way now has the franchise record for most wins by a goalie in a single season with his 35th win tonight. I know many have pegged Blake Wheeler as the team’s MVP, I know with his torrid pace of goal scoring that Laine is going to get some attention, but again I will insist that Hellebuyck all season has been my pick for Jets MVP. If this game had happened in past seasons with the type of goaltending the Jets used to get, this ends up being a blowout for the Devils.

HOW DID THEY CORSI?

Matchups are limited to 5-on-5 situations. Tile size is scaled by Time On Ice and colour is scaled by adjusted Expected Goals differential. Blue represents a home team advantage and red represents a road team advantage.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME
For Winnipeg: Connor Hellebuyck – Every little bit of extra time off that he had over the last few days was needed as Helle made 41 saves to earn the win tonight.
For New Jersey: Kyle Palmieri – All over the ice tonight offensively and finished with a goal and seven registered shots on net. Every other time the Devils had puck possession, it seemed like Palmieri’s name was being called.
NEXT FLIGHT
You have a lunch date with the Jets on Saturday as they take on the Philadelphia Flyers for a Saturday matinee. Puck drop is noon CST.
