It was a much better effort than we had saw against the same team on Friday as the Jets coasted to a 7-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Maybe they coasted a little too much near the end letting the Sabres score a pair in the final frame, but still, a win is a win.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Kyle Connor – Scored maybe the goal of the year in the third period to add to the goal and assist he had already collected.
For Buffalo: Jack Eichel – It’s a shame he’s going to constantly be in McDavid’s shadow and for now playing a while in Buffalo. Special talent that had two goals an assist as well.

TALKING POINTS

  • How did you feel about Steve Mason tonight? He got the W, made 30 saves and some of them were timely, but he also allowed four goals. I always get the sense that the Jets would love to run him out there more but, A: Connor Hellebuyck and B: they just can’t fully trust him like they can Hellebuyck. Bottom line, he did his job as a backup tonight, but it wasn’t pretty.
  • Maybe the silver lining to the Mark Scheifele injury is we’re now starting to see Kyle Connor take control of plays on his own and not wait for Scheifele or Wheeler to make a plays. Earlier this season I felt Connor was a bit of a passenger – albeit a very good one – on the Jets top line, now I think he’s making Blake Wheeler a better player in some shifts.
  • Speaking of Wheeler. Let’s maybe make it illegal to go down and block shots when up by three goals. His hand can’t be 100% right now after blocking a shot with it in the 3rd period.
  • Laine can snipe, we all know this – Does Ehlers have as good a shot as he does? Is it maybe even a little better in terms of accuracy? Just wondering…
  • You may have not realized it, but Joel Armia had six shots on goal and overall had himself a pretty good game.

NEXT FLIGHT

Winnipeg gets a couple of days off before kicking off a big time back-to-back set by first facing the Chicago Blackhawks in the Windy City on Friday night. Puck drop is 7:30 CST.
