“JN Wraparound” is a new feature we’re going to try out here where we’ll share transactions and news items concerning the Jets, Central division rivals and around the league that you may have missed over the past 24 hours or so.
The news that broke on Thursday morning that the Jets had agreed to a contract extension of Josh Morrissey was surprising if not welcome news for most Jets fans who were hoping to get word of a deal done for Patrik Laine or Kyle Connor, but were more than happy to settle for a JoMo deal.
And what a deal it is.
When you consider Ivan Provorov signed with the Philadelphia Flyers later in the same day for two years less and half a million more AAV, it only made the Morrissey deal seem even more ridiculously good in favor of the Jets.
It’s been a bit of a rough summer for Jets fans to maintain hope that this is even a playoff worthy club when just a short year ago we (and the players) had visions of Stanley Cups dancing in our heads. I don’t need to recap it all in painful detail, but more than a few people noted that this was the first bit of “good news” the Jets have had all summer and it’s hard to disagree with that thought.
Here’s hoping for more good news when it comes to 81 and 29 very shortly.

Lots of reactions to the Josh Morrissey deal on Thursday both from Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Sun and Ken Wiebe of The Athletic.
Ken Wiebe also took a look at Jets forward and second round pick from 2017 David Gustafsson who is about to take part in his first training camp with the Jets. While he’s likely headed back overseas once the NHL season gets underway, a really strong camp from Gusstafson could give him an outside chance to make the Jets.

Because Jets fans aren’t allowed to be overly happy about everything for very long, Sean Reynolds of Sportsnet has reported that three teams – one of them having just checked in with Connor’s camp as recently as the August long weekend – are exploring the idea of signing KC to an offer sheet.
To balance that out, here is a feel-good story about Mark Scheifele helping to supply suits for the new kids in town, the Winnipeg ICE.

One last take so to speak on the JoMo deal from Micah Blake McCurdy who has the maps to show that Josh is quite good in his own end of the ice and has some room for improvement on the offensive end.
Josh Morrissey (8x6.25m extension with Winnipeg) is a very good second-pair defender.
There is this tidbit from Andy Strickland who mentions that the Jets offer to Patrik Laine is in the “$5 million” range which could be taken a few ways.
If it’s closer to five million, that’s incredibly low for a 30+ goal scorer no matter what his other inefficiencies in the game are. If it’s on the higher side of that range and closer to six, then it’s at least a little better and not quite as insulting an offer. Term also matters in the case, but one would have to think “short term” means no more than two years.
Winnipeg made a recent short-term offer to RFA Patrik Laine in the $5 million per year range (less than $6). Term isn’t the issue in getting him signed. Will need to come up on money #gojetsgo
