JN Flight Plan: Philadelphia Flyers at Winnipeg Jets
alt
Art Middleton
Dec 15, 2019, 15:00 EST
It’s a Sunday late-afternoon contest as the @Winnipeg Jets kick off a three game home stand by hosting a @Philadelphia Flyers club that has more on their mind than just hockey with their leading goal scorer @Oskar Lindblom having been recently diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma which is a bone / soft tissue cancer. Our thoughts and are with Lindblom, his family and friends and the Flyers organization.
On the hockey side of things, both clubs are coming off of very disappointing efforts. The Flyers struggled badly 24 hours ago in Minnesota against the suddenly hot Wild, while the Jets maybe had the worst game of the season in Detroit against the not-so-suddenly bad Red Wings.
And for real… F**k Cancer.

Last Flyers Game

The Flyers played 24 hours ago and started off well enough with a goal on the very first shot of the game that they took, but then it went downhill from there as the Wild scored two in the first and then added goals in the second and third period as Philly fell 4-1 in Minny.

Fun Flyers Facts…

  • The Flyers come into the contest with the fourth-ranked power play in the NHL at 85 percent. They have been shorthanded 87 times, which is the fifth-fewest in the league, and are tied for the fewest PPG allowed in the league this year at 13, joining Florida.
  • The Flyers have scored first in 19 of their 32 games this season. They are 14-1-3 on the year when either leading or tied after one period, and are 16-0-3 when leading or tied after the second period.
  • @Ivan Provorov has a point in five of his last eight games, picking up two goals and three assists in the span.

What They’re Saying…

At every possible level, this is absolutely devastating news. Lindblom — who has broken out this year, and was tied for the team lead in goals this season entering today — is just 23 years old and has his whole life ahead of him. It is tough to imagine much worse news than this.
With these two Phantoms headed to Winnipeg, the Flyers now have six Phantoms in the lineup (@Joel Farabee, @Morgan Frost, @Mikhail Vorobyev, @David Kase, @Carsen Twarynski, and @Nicolas Aube-Kubel). However, Twarynski and Aube-Kubel are coming off a back to back (including travel) and tonight’s game will make it a three in three for these two. Growing pains are to be expected, but given the circumstances, the Flyers were not left with much of a choice.

Last Jets Game

Fun Jets Facts…

  • The Jets are 6-5-1 against the Eastern Conference this season, including 3-4-1 against the Metropolitan Division.
  • The Jets play five of their next six games at Bell MTS Place. Winnipeg is 9-5-1 on home ice this season, including 7-1-1 in their past nine home contests.
  • The Jets are a perfect 4-0-0 in afternoon games this season, including 2-0-0 at Bell MTS Place. It matches the four wins the Jets have had in matinee games in each of the past two seasons when they went 4-3-0.
  • Mark Scheifele (5G, 3A) and @Kyle Connor (3G, 5A) are riding five-game point streaks, which matches the season high by a Jets player.
  • @Patrik Laine tallied his 21st assist of the season on Thursday, which is one more than he had all of last season.
  • The Jets have won three of their past five games against the Flyers, including three consecutive meetings at Bell MTS Place.

What We’re Saying…

After allowing two goals against on the penalty kill from a struggling Detroit club, the Jets have moved down to 27th in the league with a man in the box. It’s been an issue all year long with the team. Even though they stay out of the box exceptionally well, when they do get a penalty it’s mayhem in their own end. The Jets do a really poor job of defending zone entries and teams can usually set up without much trouble.
