The Winnipeg Jets will get a chance to quickly shake off any ill feelings they might have had about their game last night in New York as they will take on the New Jersey Devils 24 hours later for a Friday night match-up that opens up Jersey’s 2019-20 season.

Last Devils Game

Taylor Hall scored halfway through the first period, Travis Zajac scored halfway through the third period and Cory Schneider stopped all 32 shots he faced as the Devils wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 2-0 win over the Blue Jackets in Columbus.

Fun Devils Fact…

  • Devils goalis Cory Schneider had a very good preseason with a 1.80 goals-against average and .952 save percentage. Their leading scorer in the preseason was tied among @Will Butcher, @Nico Hischier and @Jesper Bratt who all had five points each.

What They’re Saying…

“Gusev’s numbers in the KHL are staggering, especially when compared to the other NHL stars who have played in the league recently. He led the KHL in scoring last season with 82 points in 62 games, giving him 215 points in 173 games over the past three. Gusev is older now — he turned 27 years old in July — but his numbers when he was younger compare favorably to some of the NHL’s top Russian players at the same ages.”
“The club wanted its No. 1 overall pick to be as comfortable as possible and it knew the Swiss native was reticent to use his broken English in 2017. It had greatly improved after spending a year with a billet family in Halifax during his stint in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, but it wasn’t where he wanted it to be.”

Last Jets Game

Plenty of offense and not quite enough defense from the Jets who played in a highly entertaining if not somewhat disapointing loss to the New York Rangers on both team’s opening night contest.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • Winnipeg went 6-3-0 in the first game and 5-4-0 in the second game of back-to-backs last season.
  • Nikolaj Ehlers had three assists last night against the Rangers to surpass 200 career points. His three points last night tied a career high for points in a game.
  • Ville Heinola joined Jacob Trouba (2013), Kyle Connor (2015), Patrik Laine (2016) and Kristian Vesalainen (2017) as Jets first round picks since relocation that have registered a point in their NHL debut.
  • The Jets had 47 shots last night against the Rangers, which set a franchise record for most shots in a season opener.

What We’re Saying…

“Also interesting to note that the Devils will be dressing three number one overall picks in tonight’s game. Hughes, 2017 first overall pick Nico Hischier, and 2010 first overall Taylor Hall. Not sure if going the route of the Edmonton Oilers “play all the first round picks you can but do nothing to improve your goaltending” style of management is the best way to go, but the Devils are going to give it a shot.”
