JN Flight Plan #59: San Jose Sharks @ Winnipeg Jets

By Thomas Hall
Feb 14, 2020, 16:15 ESTUpdated: Feb 14, 2020, 15:54 EST
Entering tonight’s contest, the @Winnipeg Jets will look to complete their season sweep of the @San Jose Sharks. Earlier this season, the Jets won both of their previous meetings against the Sharks, including their dominating 5-1 victory coming back on Nov. 27.
For San Jose, their squad enters this game having lost six of their last nine games. In addition, the Sharks have also allowed three goals or more in seven of their previous nine matchups. So, this showdown should provide the Jets with a great opportunity to improve off their one-goal performance from Tuesday night.

Last Sharks Game
Following a fast-paced opening period, the @Calgary Flames entered the second period carrying a 3-1 lead. Despite @Brent Burns’ goal early in the middle frame, the Flames were able to restore their two-goal lead after @Mark Jankowski scored his third goal of the year. During the third period, Calgary extended their lead to 6-2 before the final buzzer sounded to end the game.
Fun Sharks Facts…
- In the four seasons (including current one) since San Jose lost in the Stanley Cup Final against the @Pittsburgh Penguins, they generated the best penalty kill net rate percentage (86.4%) and the second-highest conversion rate (82.8%) on the penalty kill throughout the entire league.
- So far this season, the Sharks have recorded the third-most number of losses (22) when they’re the first team to trail in a game.
- MILESTONE WATCH: Already in his fourth season in the NHL, forward @Timo Meier is slated to play his 250th career game later tonight.
What They’re Saying…
This season started in San Jose with Stanley Cup expectations as the team tried to make another run at a championship. The Sharks now find themselves with the second-worst record in the Western Conference, one of the worst records in the entire league, and almost zero chance of making the playoffs this season. They are not going to tear everything down, but some changes will be made.
While the shot clock doesn’t always correlate to a team’s effort or even the end result, you can definitely see the Sharks have adopted more of that shoot-first mentality under Boughner. Over the last seven weeks, they’re averaging around six more shots on net per game than they did in October and November.
Last Jets Game
Instead of reminding all of us of Winnipeg’s poor performance back on Tuesday, let’s keep this recap as short as possible. After allowing four unanswered goals through the first 42 minutes of the game, forward @Nikolaj Ehlers captured the only goal for the Jets during their 4-1 defeat against the @New York Rangers.
Fun Jets Facts…
- Under head coach Paul Maurice, the Jets are tied for the tenth-most wins (264) since he took over on Jan. 13, 2014. With a win tonight, Winnipeg would move into a tie with the @New York Islanders for the ninth-most wins during that span.
- Through 58 games this season, the Jets are tied for the fewest number of wins (1) by two goals among all 31 teams in the league.
- MILESTONE WATCH: Forward Nikolaj Ehlers enters this game just one assist shy of passing @Marc Savard for the eleventh-most in Thrashers/Jets franchise history.
What We’re Saying…
No one could accuse the Jets of not getting shots on goal during their loss to the Rangers as they actually out-shot New York 44-32. The problem was the Jets got away from driving to the net and only ended up with six even strength high danger scoring chances for, but nine against. The Jets generally give up more of those than they get most nights, but during their five-game point streak, it had felt like the Jets were at least getting to the opposing goals with a little more frequency.
