JN Flight Plan #58: New York Rangers @ Winnipeg Jets
alt
Art Middleton
Feb 11, 2020, 17:45 ESTUpdated: Feb 11, 2020, 17:29 EST
It could be a fun time in the rink tonight! The Jets are on a bit of a roll with three wins in a row and four wins out of their last five games. They are also honoring Jets 1.0 legends Randy Carlyle and Thomas Steen for Alumni Night as they add both to the Jets Hall of Fame.
And there is the matter of a returning @Jacob Trouba who will no doubt invoke some emotion from the BMTSP faithful.
It could be a very fun night indeed!

Last Rangers Game

@Greg McKegg, @Kaapo Kakko, @Artemi Panarin and @Tony DeAngelo all scored as the Rangers took an early lead and then paced themselves with Igor Shesterkin’s 42 saves in a 4-1 win over the @Los Angeles Kings.

Fun Rangers Facts…

  • The Rangers are 30-22-1-11 all-time against the Jets franchise. (12-13-1-7 at home; 18-9-0-4 on the road)
  • Jacob Trouba played six seasons with Winnipeg, and he ranks second among Jets defensemen in games played (408), goals (42), assists (137), points (179), and plus/minus rating (plus-37) since the franchise relocated to Winnipeg.
  • Artemi Panarin is the only NHL player who has recorded 70 or more points and a plus-20 rating or better in 2019-20, and he is one of three NHL players who have registered 70 or more points and have been assessed 20 or fewer penalty minutes in 2019-20.
  • New York is tied for sixth in the NHL in power play efficiency (23.4%) and is tied for fifth in the NHL in power play goals (41) this season. The Blueshirts have recorded a power play goal in five of the last seven games (8-for-18; 44.4%), in seven of the last 10 games (11-for-25; 44.0%), in nine of the last 13 games (14-for-36; 38.9%), and in 11 of the last 18 games (18-for-47; 38.3%).
  • @Mika Zibanejad is one assist away from 200 career assists. @Brendan Smith is two points away from 100 for his NHL career.

What They’re Saying…

And so when Jacob Trouba says publicly as he did on Monday he doesn’t know what kind of reception to expect upon his return to Manitoba with the Rangers on Tuesday, well, he almost assuredly does. Jaromir Jagr getting booed mercilessly in Washington every time he touched the puck as a Ranger is probably a pretty good place to start.
Following another 40-plus save performance by rookie phenom Igor Shesterkin on Sunday night, New York Rangers head coach David Quinn made an announcement that shook the foundation of Madison Square Garden. “The best guy is going to continue to play,” Quinn proclaimed. “Keeping people sharp is no longer a high priority of ours. It’s going to be winning hockey games, and the guy who plays well is going to keep playing”, as was reported by Vince A. Mercogliano.

Last Jets Game

The Jets erased a 2-0 second period deficit with five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 win against the @Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. Kyle Connor paced the Jets with two goals and an assist, while @Andrew Copp (1G, 1A), @Patrik Laine (1G, 1A), and Mark Scheifele (2A) each had two points.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • Andrew Copp has five points (3G, 2A) in his past five games, including two two-point games in his past three outings. Copp is one goal behind the career high 11 goals he scored last season.
  • Kyle Connor was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week on Monday after leading the NHL with eight points (3G, 5A) last week to help Winnipeg to a 3-0-1 record.
  • Patrik Laine is averaging a point per game since Jan. 9 with 13 points (9G, 4A) in 13 games. He’s averaging a goal per game for his past nine games and has five goals in his past three games.
  • The Jets have won three of their past four games against the Rangers, but lost the first meeting this season.
  • @Nikolaj Ehlers needs one goal to pass Evander Kane (109) for ninth in goals in franchise history.

What We’re Saying…

While both the Jets and Rangers only converted on one of their power play opportunities during their previous meeting, those same results aren’t likely to occur during tonight’s matchup. Since Jan. 1, New York has produced a league-best 40.0% conversion rate on the power play. However, their team has also recorded the most penalty minutes per game (11:38) during that same timeframe as well.
