JN Flight Plan #53: St. Louis Blues @ Winnipeg Jets
alt
Art Middleton
Feb 1, 2020, 16:00 ESTUpdated: Feb 1, 2020, 16:01 EST
The @Winnipeg Jets have lost five in a row and six of their last seven. It’s entirely possible that by the end of the night with a Wild win over the Bruins, the Jets with a loss could sink all the way to the bottom of the Central Division. That said, a win could put them two points out of the second wild card spot in the West, that’s how tight things are in the standings.
“Must win” gets thrown around a lot this time of year in the hockey world, but tonight sure feels like a must win situation, especially since the @St Louis Blues are also struggling as of late and are on the tail end of a brutal week long road trip.

Last Blues Game

The Blues fell behind the Oilers early and couldn’t quite ever catch up as their woes through Western Canada continued with a 4-2 loss in Edmonton.

Fun Blues Facts…

  • The Blues have won 3 straight games against the Jets and have earned points in 4 of their last 5 games against Winnipeg (3-1-1)
  • St Louis. is 14-9-4 on the road this season (32 points), which is the 3rd most road points in the NHL. (1. WSH, 41 points / 2. TBL, 35 points)
  • The Blues have scored first in 29 games this season and they are 22-1-6 when doing so.
  • @Alexander Steen is expected to dress in his 1,000th career game on Saturday at Winnipeg. Steen also recorded his 494th point as a Blue on Tuesday in Calgary, which moved him past Pavol Demitra for sole possession of 5th on the Blues all-time franchise list.
  • @Alex Pietrangelo has 8 points in his last 7 games (1g, 7a) while @Ryan O’Reilly has 10 points in his last 11 games (1g, 9a)
  • The Blues are 14-4-2 this season when @David Perron scores at least 1 goal in a game.

What They’re Saying…

This season he has been the Blues’ top offensive threat. Arguably, he has been one of the best offensive threats in the league in 2019-20. While that may come as no surprise to fans that have been paying attention, I want the reader to know just how special this career-year has been for 57.
The Blues seem a throwback to the hard, heavy teams like the New Jersey Devils and the Dallas Stars. While small and fast works in regular-season, the Blues have a team built for league and playoffs. They’ve got terrific foot-soldiers, just enough scoring and maybe the Selke Award leader in Ryan O’Reilly, who always seems to be on the right-side of the puck checking the stars with just five minor penalties.

Last Jets Game

It was maybe one of the best efforts we had seen from the Jets in a while, but both the penalty kill and the power play let the Jets down as a pair of Bruins power play goals proved better than the six times the Jets came up empty with their own man advantage in a 2-1 loss to Boston.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • The Jets racked up a season high 35 penalty minutes last night against Boston, which included three fighting majors and a 10 minute misconduct. Winnipeg has been one of the least penalized teams this season with an average of 7.4 penalty minutes per game, which is tied for sixth fewest in the NHL. @Mark Scheifele leads the Jets in penalty minutes this season with 43, which is 35th in the NHL.
  • Winnipeg is 2-4-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.
  • @Nikolaj Ehlers needs one goal to pass Marian Hossa (108) for 10th in goals in franchise history.
  • The Jets are 1-7-0 in their past eight games, but have lost by one goal in four of the seven defeats. They have six losses by one goal this season, which is tied for fifth in the NHL.

What We’re Saying…

Perhaps the Jets could move Nikolaj Ehlers into the top unit or maybe have Josh Morrissey take a turn in Pionk’s spot. Whatever the case, it needs a shakeup to counter the Jets bad penalty kill which at this point in the season we’ve all just accepted as really bad and have moved on. Problem is Maurice isn’t likely to change anything up without a practice between games, so we’ll just have to hope the Jets get lucky with any power play opportunities they get tonight.
