A little over two weeks ago – 15 days to be exact – the Winnipeg Jets shot everything but the kitchen sink at Cam Talbot and the Edmonton Oilers and still lost 3-1.
Tonight the script was flipped, the Nashville Predators shot everything including the sink at the Jets but Connor Hellebyuck put up a virtual wall and helped earn the Jets a 4-1 win.
Funny how things even out like that sometimes.
And just like the game against the Oilers, the Preds completely out-played the Jets for a good majority of the game out-shooting Winnipeg to the tune of 44 to 19. The only two areas of the game the Jets were better was special teams (the Jets going 2 for 3 with the man advantage while the Preds went 0 for 4) and slightly better on faceoffs.
Beyond that, this game defied all logic.
The Jets in the first period alone faced 29 Nashville shot attempts. 6 of those missed the net, 6 more were blocked by Jets players and the other 17 were stopped by Hellebuyck. The Predators had 5 high scoring offensive chances (compared to the Jets 3) and doubled the Jets in offensive zone starts (12-6) And yet thanks to a Drew Stafford power play goal – on the road no less where it was just his 3rd such goal of the season – the Jets led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The Jets did even things up a little closer come the second and third periods both in shots and puck possession, but this was still all Predators pretty much all the time… And the Jets found a way to win.

THREE KEYS

Hellebuyck: Did a fantastic job in limiting rebounds, stayed calm in the net and didn’t get caught scrambling the odd time the Preds had a dangerous chance in front of his net.
Hellebuyck: Seriously, the kid was awesome. Looked relaxed the entire time, even after the Jets led off the first minute of the game giving up two odd man rushes. He stopped a Shea Weber half-clapper point blank from about three feet from the crease. You couldn’t ask for much more.
Hellebuy.. Oh ok fine, special teams: If you didn’t see the game then I would understand that you keep feeling that the statement “Drew Stafford scored twice on the power play” feels like a massive typo or a glitch in the Matrix. Somewhere law of averages suggested that the power play had to get going – or at the very least be slightly better than ‘awful’ – at some point soon, but the Jets get full marks for keeping things simple, getting pucks and traffic in front of Pekka Rinne and for giving the Preds very little to work with when they were on the penalty kill.
