There was some concern following Tuesday’s preseason matchup in Minnesota when Winnipeg Jets forward Jonathan Toews left the game in the second period with what appeared to be an injury.
Head coach Scott Arniel addressed the situation Thursday morning after practice at hockey for all centre, clarifying that the veteran centre had simply “tweaked something.” Toews is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
It’s a lower-body issue for #NHLJets C Jonathan Toews.
The Jets don’t seem overly worried, suggesting it’s more precautionary than serious. While it’s unlikely Toews will dress Friday in Calgary for the final preseason game, the bigger question is whether he’ll be ready for the home opener next Thursday against the Dallas Stars at Canada Life Centre.
Vladislav Namestnikov had also taken a brutal hit from Minnesota’s Yakov Trenin on Tuesday. He was pulled from the game by the concussion spotter and did not return, but was back on the ice Thursday and participated fully in practice.
Toews was absent from practice Thursday, leaving the Jets to adjust their forward lines. Here’s how the lines looked:
Connor – Scheifele – Vilardi
Nyquist – Namestnikov – Perfetti
Niedereiter – Barron – Iafallo
Koepke – Ford – Pearson
Gustafsson/Chibrikov – Lambert – Duehr
Morrissey – DeMelo
Stanley – Pionk
Fleury – Schenn
Heinola – Miller
The top nine forwards looked as expected, but with Adam Lowry out and Toews questionable, Namestnikov may once again step into the second-line centre role. On the back end, the Jets are already shorthanded with Dylan Samberg out 6–8 weeks due to a broken wrist, which could force more line juggling.
The Jets close out their preseason Friday night in Calgary, with puck drop set for 8:00 p.m. on TSN3.
