Training camps are getting closer and closer and it won’t be long until we’re talking about the rookie camp and start breaking down some of the various training camp battles that will be taking place for the few open spots the Winnipeg Jets have available.
But until then, there are still some newsworthy moments that concern the Jets that happened over the weekend that you may have missed as you tried to squeeze the last little bit of enjoyment from one of the few summer weekends we have left.
That’s what we’re here for, to help you get caught up…

VESALAINEN SIGNS

While there has been some noise made about how the Jets stock of good young talent has depleted over the last few seasons – mostly due to the high graduation rate of prospects that come up from juniors and minor pro into the Jets main roster – but Winnipeg’s run of having highly thought of prospects come in and make an instant impact on the team may not be done this season thanks to the likes Sami Niku and Kristen Vesalainen, the latter of whom signed a entry level contract Sunday afternoon.
Hopes are high for the 19 year old Finnish born forward to make the NHL lineup and make some waves like a fellow Jets teammate and countryman who’s last name happens to subtly be a part of Kristian’s surname. Just recently, Kyle Buhler speculated some possible line combinations that feature Winnipeg’s possible latest rookie sensation.
There are still three other restricted free agents for Kevin Cheveldayoff to get signed: JC Lipon, Eric Comrie and Josh Morrissey

HELLEBUYCK NAMED FOURTH BEST RIGHT NOW

The NHL Network pressed on with its positional Top 20 lists and this weekend the focus was on goaltenders. As you can expect, Connor Hellebuyck placed pretty high, ranking fourth on the list.
Some may be a bit tired of hearing the same story about Hellebuyck’s past year, how he went from potential bust to tweaking his summer training and working on aspects of his game that lacked and then took over the starting goalie gig and went on to set a record for wins by an American born goalie and a Vezina nomination. It’s a remarkable feat though and one rarely done and even more rarely seen with such immediate results.
Yes, we know “goalies are voodoo” and it’s yet to be seen if Hellebuyck can sustain his outstanding play this coming season, but there doesn’t seem to be any indication that it won’t happen and as the NHL Network crew speculated, Hellebuyck could be in position for a run of multiple 30-40 win seasons.

JETS AT THE STARS AND STRIPES SHOWDOWN

Connor Hellebuyck was joined by fellow American born Jets teammates Jacob Trouba, Jack Roslovic, Kyle Connor and Andrew Copp in Plymouth, Michigan on Sunday to take part in the USA Hockey Stars And Stripes Showdown.
Team Blue – a roster that included all of the Jets save for Roslovic – took the victory with Conor and Trouba each getting a pair of goals in the contest while Copp helped out with a marker of his own set up by K.C…
Roslovic didn’t happen to get involved in the scoring for Team White while Connor Hellebuyck had a good view of all the action but didn’t happen to get any playing time.

SCHEIFELE SPIED ON?

Lastly, forward Mark Scheifele in in a new ad campaign for Warrior Hockey and it turns out the secret to all his powers may just be his stick…
