The Winnipeg Jets have no game scheduled today after bouncing back with a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues in the second half of a back-to-back last night, but NHL insiders David Pagnotta and Chris Johnston continued to spotlight the Jets in trade discussions.
Names like Logan Stanley, Gustav Nyquist, and Luke Schenn have been mentioned for over a month now as players the Jets are listening to offers on, but Schenn’s name continues to pop up, especially again today from Johnston.
“They have a lot of defencemen and it’s pretty clear that Luke Schenn is one of the pieces they’re dangling; he’s another player I could see dealt relatively near term,” Johnston said on The Chris Johnston Show.
For the Jets, if they’re trying to move Schenn, which they clearly are, the goal would be to get at least a third-round draft pick in return. Kevin Cheveldayoff gave up a 2026 second and a 2027 fourth to take on the 36-year-old’s $2.75M cap hit, which has obviously turned into an overpay. If Cheveldayoff can recoup a pick for him, it’s at least a partial win.
Schenn has one goal and five assists in 35 games this season, while over 1,107 career games he’s recorded 45 goals and 166 assists.
Pagnotta also mentioned that Vincent Trocheck’s name has been circulating as well. He believes Trocheck has been on the radar of the Minnesota Wild, and that teams like the Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Jets would inquire about him.
A player like Trocheck wouldn’t be a bad acquisition if the Jets are retooling for next season, because at this point, with the way things are trending, it’s fair to question whether playoffs should even be in the conversation. Trocheck would give Winnipeg the solid second-line centre they’ve been searching for, and with him in the fourth year of a seven-year deal, he wouldn’t just be a rental. That said, the 32-year-old does have a modified no-trade clause, which could factor into whether he’d approve a move to Winnipeg. Still, the Jets could at least poke their heads in that direction, and it’ll be interesting to see if anything materializes, especially with the New York Rangers expected to sell off several of their top players.
Trocheck has 11 goals and 21 assists in 37 games this season, and has totalled 234 goals and 376 assists across 838 NHL games.
