The Jets five game point streak ended last night, losing 2-0 on the road against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Jets couldn’t solve Spencer Knight, and a pair of goals past Connor Hellebuyck was all the home team needed. Tonight, the Jets returned to Canada Life Centre to host another Central Division opponent, the St. Louis Blues. The Jets were looking to quickly reset after last night and start a new point streak. The 19-23-6 Jets took on the 19-22-8 Blues, with both teams looking for two points as they attempt to slowly climb up the league standings.
There were no changes to the Jets line combinations tonight, as they stuck with the same lineup that they used last night. Gustav Nyquist was once again on line 4 (instead of Cole Koepke) and Luke Schenn remained on the 2nd pairing with Dylan Samberg. The Jets 3rd pairing tonight was Logan Stanley and Isaak Phillips, who was appearing in his 2nd game with the Jets.
Eric Comrie got the start in goal after a handful of games off, as Hellebuyck rested after a pretty strong performance despite the loss last night. The Jets lineup continues to be almost healthy and injury free except for Haydn Fleury, Neal Pionk and Colin Miller. Elias Salomonsson is out with an illness. Comrie entered tonight’s game with 7-9-1 record, a 3.33 GAA and a below average .884 SV%. Tonight’s game started out evenly, before the Jets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the middle of the 1st. The Jets never lost their lead and held on for a closely contested win.
1st Period
Tonight’s game started out pretty evenly, with both teams getting a few chances on goal. Both teams stayed disciplined until Nathan Walker was called for a 4 minute double minor for high sticking Isaak Phillips.
The Jets top powerplay unit went to work, and they would score not one, but two goals on this man advantage, starting the game a perfect 2 for 2 on the powerplay. The first goal saw Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele setting up in the Blues zone before finding Josh Morrissey at the point for a one-timed slap shot past Joel Hofer.
Less than two minutes later, on the 2nd powerplay on this double minor, Mark Scheifele scored his 24th goal of the season. Josh Morrissey fired a shot on goal that went wide but he got his own rebound. Morrissey found Scheifele down low, and he snuck towards the net before snapping the puck up and over Hofer to make it 2-0 Jets.
You sneaky sneaky Mark 😮💨
The rest of the opening period went without any more goals, as the Blues weren’t able to respond to the pair of powerplay goals. Jonathan Toews took a slashing penalty with 32 seconds left in the period, giving the Blues a chance to reset and open the 2nd period with a shortened powerplay. Shots on goal after 20 minutes played were only 6-6.
2nd Period
The 2nd period started with the Jets on the penalty kill, but they shut down the Blues who didn’t create many scoring opportunities. Both teams continued to try to generate more shots on goal, but halfway through this game the shots on goal were tied at only 11.
Everything continued to go well for the Jets for the next stretch of play, as they did well to maintain their two goal lead. With less than 4 minutes remaining in the 2nd, Vladislav Namestnikov took a 4 minute double minor for high sticking Jonatan Berggren. The Blues made sure to capitalize early on this powerplay. Dalibor Dvorsky sent the puck back for Justin Faulk, who looked and found Jordan Kyrou for a one-timer slap shot which flew up past Comrie and into the net.
KYROU ONE-TIMER 🚨
Just like the Jets did with their 4 minute powerplay earlier, the Blues scored in the first 2 minutes, meaning they still had another powerplay to go. The Jets re-grouped and shut down the Blues for the rest of the 2nd period, holding on to a 2-1 lead. The Blues would get a very short powerplay to start the 3rd, and the Blues were now outshooting the Jets 17-14 after 40 minutes played as they continued to push back in this game.
3rd Period
The 3rd period started with the Jets killing off a very short Blues powerplay. Two minutes later, Dvorsky was called for holding on Jonathan Toews, giving the Jets a powerplay opportunity of their own. The Jets didn’t get much going on this opportunity, and two minutes after the penalty expired the Blues went back on the powerplay. Dylan DeMelo got his 3rd blocked shot of the night and Comrie made a few saves to keep this a 2-1 game with 10 minutes to go.
The Blues continued to push for the equalizer, and were now outshooting the Jets 22-15. There wouldn’t be any more penalties in this game, as both teams continued to push for that next important goal. That next goal wouldn’t happen until after the Blues pulled their goalie with around 3 minutes left. After collecting the puck in the Jets zone, Morrissey sent a strong pass up to Kyle Connor, who then made a nice pass off the boards to Scheifele who was racing down the ice. Scheifele collected the puck and wristed it into the empty net for his 25th goal of the season.
Now with a late two goal lead, the Jets went into “protect” mode as the Blues made their final push with the net again empty. Comrie made a few more saves, and the Jets held on for a 3-1 victory on this Tuesday night. Comrie made 22 saves, as the Blues outshot the Jets 6-2 in the final period and 23-16 overall. Morrissey had 1 goal and 2 assists, Mark Scheifele had 2 goals and 1 assist, and Kyle Connor had 2 assists, as the Jets star players came to play in this mostly defensive battle.
