The Winnipeg Jets have a more reassuring track record in the tail end of back-to-back games than their next opponent does on the front end.
The Jets are the +115 moneyline underdog while the New Jersey Devils are a -135 favorite with a 6.0-goal total on the NHL odds for Friday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Coming off of a 6-4 loss against the New York Rangers in their regular-season opener on Thursday, the Jets are 9-6 in their last 15 games when they played the previous day and the total has gone OVER 12 of the last 20 times when they were in the second of back-to-back contests.

The Devils will be hopeful that first overall pick Jack Hughes, who is making his NHL debut, can help them rectify being 4-11 in their last 15 games when they were also playing the next day; the total has also gone OVER at online betting sites in 10 of those games. New Jersey visits the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
The upside of the Jets’ defeat against the Rangers was that their first two lines generated plenty of offense. The Mark Scheifele-Nikolaj Ehlers-Blake Wheeler first line combined for six points and 21 shots on goal, while the Andrew Copp-Kyle Connor-Patrik Laine second line had two points and 15 shots. Natural Stat Trick classified 15 of the Jets’ 47 shots on goal as coming from the high danger area, which ties into the fact the total has gone OVER in nine of the Jets’ last 15 regular-season road games as an underdog of 100 to +120 on the moneyline.
Laurent Brossoit, who had a 2.52 goals-against average in 21 games as the backup last season, will start in goal.
The Devils, meanwhile, are a bit of a blank slate, given that they are very young down the middle with back-to-back No. 1 overall picks, Nico Hischier and Hughes, lining up as their top two centers. The Devils are 2-8 in their last 10 home games against Central Division teams and the total has gone OVER in five of those six most recent games from that sample. A return to health from dynamic left wing Taylor Hall and the addition of left wing Nikita Gusev should also bring the Devils more natural offense, while former Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban is now anchoring their first defense pairing.
Veteran goalie Cory Schneider will start for the Devils.
The Jets complete their season-opening four-game east coast road trip against the New York Islanders on Sunday and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
