The Winnipeg Jets have took to social media this afternoon to begin announcing some the 2023-24 team awards. The awards celebrate the Winnipeg Jets both on and off to ice, highlighting players who have made an impact for the team this season. Each award is a way of highlighting qualities within a player that make them stand out, and it’s a way to honour their commitment to the success of the Jets organization.
The first team award that was announced is the 2024 3 Stars award, which went to star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. This award is given each year to the player on the Jets who receives the most “3 Stars” honours throughout the entirety of the season. When Hellebuyck plays to the best of his abilities, the Jets usually follow through as a team with a win. Hellebuyck had himself another Vezina-caliber season, posting 37 wins, 5 shutouts, a 2.39 goals against average and a save percentage of .921%.
The next player to take home a team award this afternoon was defenceman Dylan DeMelo. DeMelo is the recipient of the Dan Snyder award. This award goes to the player in the organization who displays qualities of hard work, dedication, and most importantly, perseverance. Another element of this award is that it’s awarded to a player who displays those qualities without really getting the recognition they deserve. DeMelo is the type of player who wants to go out there every game and make his teammates succeed. He set career highs in assists, with 28, as well as points, with 31 on the year.
Last but not least, the final Winnipeg Jets team award that was announced this afternoon was the Wawanesa Community Service award. You might be able to guess who won this one, it was captain Adam Lowry. This award honours the player who shows a strong commitment to the Winnipeg community. Some questioned the decision to have Adam Lowry named the captain this season, but he has proven that he can be a leader on and off the ice. Lowry is one of those players that takes the time when he is off the ice to assist in the community he represents on the ice. Going into tonight’s game, Lowry sits just 1 point behind his career best from last season of 36 points.
Other team awards are possibly yet to be announced at tonight’s final regular season home game. More “traditional” awards such as the team MVP, best offensive and defensive players, and the unsung hero, are some of the possible awards given out on the final night which have been awarded in the past.
Congrats to Hellebuyck, DeMelo and Lowry on their achievements this season!
