What would you do Wednesday: Abundance of Defencemen

In this installment of What Would You
Do Wednesday, I want to see what you, the readers, would do with Winnipeg’s
increasing abundance of defencemen with one-way contracts. Which bodies would
you move? Who do you keep up in the NHL? Who are your pairings when everyone is
healthy? Let us know, you’re the general manager.

THE SCENARIO

With Zach Bogosian, Mark Stuart and
Toby Enstrom all returning to the Jets lineup this past week, Winnipeg has
experienced a bit of a logjam on their back-end.
As of Winnipeg’s last game, the six
defencemen that played together were, Ben Chiarot with Dustin Byfuglien,
Enstrom with Bogosian and Stuart and Jay Harrison. Not a bad looking set of
six.
But with these six playing the last
three games, Adam Pardy and Paul Postma have since been scratched and had to
watch their team go 2-0-1 in their last three games.
It’s been noted that Pardy may be
nursing a bit of an injury during this span, but Postma who had played the
first 41 games of the season for the Jets proved that he was a valuable asset
when the team was battling injuries.
Finally, the Jets have two players on
injured reserve right now, Jacob Trouba (upper body,) who is slated to return
in February and Grant Clitsome (back,) who is out indefinitely. It is hard to
imagine that Trouba will not be back into the Jets lineup the moment he is
healthy. The same cannot be said about Clitsome.
When all is said and done, there is a
total of 10 defencemen with one-way contracts and only seven roster spots.
Options for dealing with Winnipeg’s
defensive logjam include:
·      When Trouba is healthy, moving Byfuglien back up to forward
where he started the season. Byfuglien has proved to be one of Winnipeg’s most
valuable assets during this injury spree. But now it could be time to see him back
up on the wing, despite Byfuglien’s and Chiarot’s established chemistry.
·      Moving some players with appealing contracts such as Postma,
Pardy, Clitsome and Harrison. Because you know there is no way the other six
are going anywher
·      Send two or three players down to the minors through waivers in order
to make room on the team.

HOW IT WORKS

Feel free to lets us know what you
would do with all these defencemen. Do you keep Byfuglien on the point with
Chiarot, or do you move him back to the wing to open a spot for Harrison,
Postma or Pardy? What would you expect back in a trade for any defenceman? Who
would you place on waivers and send to the minors? What seven players are a
part of your defence corps when everyone is healthy? Why? Make a point, leave
some comments, and fight for your beliefs. It’s What Would You Do Wednesday.
