Winnipeg Jets centre @Mark Scheifele snapped his seven-game goalless drought with a highlight-reel marker to open the scoring in his team’s game against the New Jersey Devils on Friday.
After taking a pass from @Neal Pionk just inside the offensive zone, Scheifele darted past attempted stick-checks by @Dawson Mercer, @Ty Smith, and @P.K. Subban before flipping a backhand shot over a sprawling Devils goaltender @Jonathan Bernier.
Pionk and @Blake Wheeler picked up the assists on Scheifele’s third goal of the season, which came just 1:52 into regulation time. Here’s the video of the play, as posted by the NHL’s official Twitter account:
The Jets currently lead the Devils by a 3–2 score through 20 minutes of play. Scheifele, @Nikolaj Ehlers and @Kristian Vesalainen all scored in the first eight minutes to hand the Jets a 3–0 lead; @Damon Severson responded shortly after the 9:00 mark to cut the Devils’ deficit to 3–1.
Winnipeg entered Friday’s contest in sixth place in the NHL’s Central Division with a 10–8–4 record and 24 points in 22 games.
