Welcome back to this week’s edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 1994 (March 15), the Winnipeg Jets acquired Dave Manson from the Edmonton Oilers along with a 6th round pick that turned into Chris Kibermanis.
In exchange, Winnipeg gave up Mats Lindgren, Boris Mironov, a 1994 first-round pick (Jason Bonsignore) and a 1994 fourth-round pick (Adam Copeland).
Struggling with chronic laryngitis, newly traded tough guy Dave Manson arrived at the Winnipeg Arena Tuesday and whispered that he won’t let big-money pressure get to him this time. Manson traded by the Edmonton Oilers in return for Jets defence-man Boris Mironov had a miserable season that he attributed to the high expectations of playing under a $1.2 million US contract. Tuesday’s trade also saw the Jets get a sixth-round draft pick in 1994 while the Oilers receive Swedish centre Mats Lindgren, plus first- and fourth-round picks in the 1994 entry draft. The Russian Mironov is to join the Oilers on their current road trip. “It was just an off year,” croaked Manson, wearing his brand new No. 3 Jets jersey. “I’m confident in my ability . . . things have been slow to come back but I know they’ll come back.” However Manson cautioned against expecting miracles as he descends on a team that has almost no chance of reaching the playoffs. “You cant come here expecting to save the world, to save the organization, because that’s not going to happen, that takes 20 guys,” said the 27-year-old defenceman, who calls himself a no-frills, straight-line hockey player.
Manson only played with the club for four seasons, scoring 73 points and totaling 559 PIM in 205 games. The tough game was later traded to the Montreal Canadiens on March 18, 1997 for Murray Baron and Chris Murray.
Lindgren spent three seasons in Edmonton scoring 68 points in 199 games, while Mironov spent six in the Alberta city. There, Mironov scored 160 points in 320 games. Bonsignore is widely considered to be the biggest NHL draft bust in league history playing a 79 game NHL career scoring three goals and 13 assists.
