The CHL officially cancels remainder of regular season

Yesterday, the Canadian Hockey League (QMJHL, OHL, and WHL) officially decided to cancel the remainder of the 2019-20 season, officially scrapping the remaining regular-season games that were scheduled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time of posting, there has yet to be any official word on what will happen with the playoffs or the Memorial Cup.

In regards to the cancellation, the QMJHL was the first league to announce that it had cancelled its season and the WHL and OHL followed suit shortly after. WHL Commissioner Ron Robinson issued the following statement…

Looking at the Jets prospect pool, there are a couple of defensive prospects that are impacted by the decision to forego the remainder of the regular season (at least).

Former fifth-round pick (150th overall in 2018) Declan Chisholm (D) will wrap up his season with the 13 goals and 56 assists for 69 points in 59 games with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. Sticking with the OHL, fellow fifth-round pick (153rd overall in 2018) Giovanni Vallati finishes his season with the Oshawa Generals with one goal and 26 assists for 27 points in 61 games played.

If the league is unable to continue in any form, both of these players will have played their last games in junior as both are set to turn pro next season provided that they are signed to entry-level contracts by the Winnipeg Jets.
