The Winnipeg Jets are retaining a lot of their betting value, since their struggles seem to be compounding when in reality one win would put them right back in their playoff series.
The Jets are a slim -120 home favourite (bet $120 to win $100) with the St. Louis Blues a +100 even-money away underdog on the NHL betting lines for Friday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com, while there is a 5.5-goal total.
Winnipeg, which trails 1-0 in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series, is just 4-6 at home this season when it is a moneyline favourite in the -115 to -140 range, and it is also 0-4 in its last four home games at the Bell MTS Centre. St. Louis is 7-5 in its last 12 games as the road underdog.
St. Louis, one of the NHL’s hottest teams over the final weeks of the regular season, took a 1-0 series lead and wrested home-ice advantage with a 2-1 win on Wednesday. Patrik Laine scored the only Jets goal. The Blues relied on goalie Jordan Binnington and some puck luck – the Jets hit the goalpost three times – to stay in the game and then scored two third-period goals to win.
Winnipeg had a paucity of ‘home plate shots’ on Binnington in Game 1, confining itself to attempts from the perimeter, and until center Mark Scheifele and the supporting cast of attacking forwards change that, goals could be hard for the Jets to come by. The total has gone UNDER in seven of St. Louis’ last 12 away games as the underdog, according to the OddsShark NHL Database, so there seems to be a goodly chance of another low-scoring contest, especially since the Jets might be trying to minimize mistakes as they look to get a series-tying win.
Whatever issues the Jets are having probably shouldn’t be pinned on goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who is 7-6-1 since March 1 but has a 2.59 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in that span. His save percentage over this stretch is actually higher than that of Binnington, who is 10-3-0 with a 2.23 GAA and .916 save percentage since March 1.
Over their last 10 games, the Jets have cashed in just 15.63 percent of their power plays while the penalty killing is operating at 83.78 percent efficiency. It is a similar story for the Blues’ special teams, with respective success rates of 16.22 percent and 84.38 percent.
Following Friday’s game, the series shifts south to St. Louis for games 3 and 4 on Sunday and Tuesday.
