The Jets website announced that Connor Hellebuyck has be re-assigned to the AHL.
The cut brings down the Jets training camp roster from 27 to 26 (excluding Grant Clitsome).
Hellebuyck will be moving across the hall to the Manitoba Moose’s camp.
The young netminder took the world by storm after posting a 0.921 save percentage in his rookie season, on a very, very terrible St. John’s IceCaps squad. For context, the IceCaps were 28-22-5 with Hellebuyck in net and 4-11-6 without.
Hellebuyck came 3rd overall in our Top 20 Prospects Profile. While goaltenders are tough to project, there is not much of a stronger bet then a goaltender who has posted the best collegiate career save percentage in the NCAA, then was 9 points over AHL save percentage average in his rookie year, and then finally was one of the strongest netminders in the World Championships. All before turning 22.
Hellebuyck will be looked to carry the bulk of the workload for the Moose, which may lead to the Jets’ management pushing young Eric Comrie to the ECHL for starts.
The Jets camp has now been cut down to 15 forwards, 9 defenders, and 2 goaltenders. The final roster number will need to be 23.
