It was the fun kind of hockey. With chances at both ends of the rink, offense reigned supreme as the Leafs doubled up the Jets 6-3. Despite Winnipeg getting nearly 50 shots towards Frederik Andersen, they could only get three goals past him throughout the game. Toronto didn’t have these problems as they routinely beat Hellebuyck with dangerous chances from all over the ice. These two clubs are set for the rematch next week as Winnipeg flies into Toronto next Wednesday.

It’s always fun when the Leafs come to town with the Matthews-Laine rivalry and the all Canadian matchup. With the Leafs being at the top of the league in terms of goal scoring, Winnipeg needed to be excellent in their own end to not allow anything dangerous.

The strong defensive play never materialized as the Jets struggled from the drop of the puck. The teams went back and forth for the first several shifts in a high event style with both teams getting excellent chances. The Jets couldn’t convert, but the Leafs could as Hellebuyck had a brutal giveaway behind his own net. He lost the puck to hometown kid Adam Brooks who picked up his first career point in his home city.

The only play worse than Hellebuyck’s giveaway was Sbisa’s which happened a few minutes later. Sbisa was skating back into his own end and forgot to bring the puck along as he turned up the ice. Kapanen had a freebie on Hellebuyck and managed to sneak the puck through the five-hole to open up a 2-0 lead.

Despite going down early, the Jets actually generated a number of chances. The top line had some excellent zone time and Laine had a few dangerous scoring chances that were stopped by Andersen. Andersen was perfect in the period and Winnipeg went into the dressing room down by two goals.

Winnipeg came out flying in the second as they had an early powerplay after Spezza cleared the puck over the glass. Kyle Connor kept up his goal scoring streak as he broke into the zone after Scheifele made a really nice move at the blue line. The low blocker shot fooled Andersen and the Jets were on the board.

The goal gave Winnipeg all of the momentum and Winnipeg strung together a number of really good shifts in a row. It culminated in a beautiful rush by Laine who turned Rielly inside out and managed to get a bad angle shot towards the net. Andersen was caught out of position and the Jets tied the game.

With the game tied, Winnipeg seemed to be in control of the game. But the funny thing about hockey is that anything can happen at any time. Right after Laine tied things up, the Leafs came down and scored on their first chance of the period. The first shot went off the post but Dermott was there to slam home the rebound.

The Leafs weren’t done as they completely sucked the air out of the building with another goal just 35 seconds later. Toronto won the draw in Winnipeg’s end and immediately snapped the puck past Hellebuyck to stun the Jets with two quick goals.

As if the game wasn’t a big enough roller coaster, Scheifele got the Jets back to within one as he let go a long-range shot that beat Andersen and found the back of the net.

Things still didn’t settle down as the period wore on. Winnipeg took a penalty and the league’s worst penalty kill went to work. In true Jets fashion, they gave up a powerplay goal and went down by two for the third time in the game.

That was some crazy hockey in the middle frame. To recap, Winnipeg scored twice to tie the game at two.

Shortly after, Toronto scored twice to go up 4-2. The teams swapped goals after that as the score after two periods was 5-3.

The Jets came out with a few good shots at the start of the frame, but Andersern stood tall and kept the two goal lead alive. Winnipeg, on the other hand, switched their netminders as Brossoit entered the game. The Jets gave up a few really dangerous chances early on, but Brossoit made a few nice saves.

Unfortunately, Brossoit couldn’t stop everything as Nylander scored his second of the game on a backdoor feed from Kerfoot.

With the Leafs now up by three goals, things settled down in the final minutes of the third period. The Jets pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but couldn’t find a goal as they fell to Toronto by a final score of 6-3.

Sometimes the puck goes in and sometimes it doesn’t. The Jets generated tons of chances and shots, but they weren’t able to get much past Andersen. Toronto did the opposite as they had few shots, but more dangerous opportunities as they scored easily on a number of occasions.

With 800 shots attempts in this game, Patrik Laine is your Top Gun of the game. Ok, he actually finished with 13 shots on net, but he looked dangerous all game long and even scored a goal with a beautiful move around Rielly as he came into the offensive zone. His effort tonight gives him Jetsnation Top Gun honours.

The Jets hit the road for a date with the Wild on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is at 1:00 PM. This kicks off a four game road trip as the team heads east to take on Montral, Toronto, and Boston next week.
