The Winnipeg Jets fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the first period to win a big Central Division battle. The Blackhawks jumped out to an early lead but Winnipeg turned things around after the first period as they came out with much more purpose in the final fourty minutes of the game. A strong second had Winnipeg scoring once, while the third period went completely in Winnipeg’s favour as they scored four straight goals to get the victory. Kyle Connor led the way with three points while Copp, Scheifele, and Laine all finished with two points each. This win is huge in the standings as it creates a little bit of separation from Chicago. Every point is important at this time of year and Winnipeg did well to pick up both points tonight.

After getting a big win against Ottawa yesterday afternoon, the Jets were looking to keep their winning ways going with a quick start against Chicago. That couldn’t be further from what actually happened as the Blackhawks opened the scoring only 15 seconds into the game. The only neat thing about the goal was that it was Jonathan Toews 800th career point. The actual goal was brutal as the Jets had five players watching the puck with nobody picking up the open man in the slot.

The period didn’t get much better after that as the Jets struggled to get anything towards the Chicago net. To make matters worse, Chicago scored their second of the game before the ten minute mark of the period as Saad tipped one past Hellebuyck from in tight.

Two goals for Chicago, two bad examples of defense from Winnipeg. The Jets had a few chances to answer later in the period with two separate powerplays. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to score on either of them as the Jets headed into the first intermission down 2-0.

After a dismal start to the first period, the Jets came out much better in the second period. Scheifele had the best chance as he found himself all alone in front of the net but Crawford was able to make the save and preserve the two goal lead. Moments later it was Ehlers who was robbed by Crawford on a cross-crease one-timer. Things started to get a little wild after that as Winnipeg took a penalty but managed to score on the penalty kill. Copp fed the puck across the ice to Connor streaking in the other side and with a sudden burst the Jets found themselves within a goal.

The Jets found some life after the goal as they started to carry most of the play. However, just as things were starting to go well, they took a penalty which gave some of the momentum back to Chicago. Back and forth the teams went with both clubs getting chances on net. The Jets had a powerplay of their own but they couldn’t capitalize as the scored remained 2-1. The goalies continued to play well at both ends of the rink and the second period ended with a 2-1 Chicago lead despite numerous chances all over the ice.

The Jets continued their momentum into the third period as they got majority of the chances despite trailing in the game. They just needed something to go their way in order to tie the game. That something came in the form of a powerplay goal where Wheeler let go an absolutely beautiful shot that beat Crawford on the short side. The gorgeous snipe tied the game at two and the game was all-square for the first time since the opening seconds.

With the game now tied, the crowd started to get back into it and the Jets seemed to gain more energy. That energy turned itself into another goal as Andrew Copp continued his recent hot-streak. He made a backdoor cut towards the crease and was able to flip the puck over Crawford’s shoulder to give Winnipeg their first lead of the game.

There was no looking back as the Jets closed things out with a solid defensive effort in the final few shifts. Laine added one empty net goal while Connor notched his second of the game, also into the open cage. With those final two goals, the Jets came away with the 5-2 final.

After going down 2-0 in the first period, the Jets turned the tide in the second as they dominated the shot totals and controlled most of the play in the second and third periods. A big third period with four goals  was the main difference as Winnipeg was able to score with the game on the line.

Andrew Copp if the Jetsnation Top Gun tonight. He had one goal and one assist and they both came at very important times. His assist came off a gorgeous saucer pass while shorthanded as he fed Connor on a two on one. Even more importantly, his goal was the game winner as he managed to score the third goal with the game tied at two in the third period. Copp also tied for the team lead in shots with six and had an impressive 20:01 of ice time.

After two straight victories on home ice, the Jets hope to keep it rolling at Bell MTS Place on Tuesday night. The Rangers are coming to town and these teams haven’t seen each other since the very first game of the year on October 3. This also marks Trouba’s first game back in Winnipeg since being traded last year.
