The Winnipeg Jets downed the Dallas Stars as Scheifele snapped home the winner in overtime. The Jets continue to lead the league in extra time victories as they improve to 4-0 in overtime games. It was an up and down game from Winnipeg who got caught in a bit of a lull in the second period. However, they pulled it out in third period as Copp tied the game off a rebound. The Jets controlled majority of the play in the third and ended the game quickly in overtime as Scheifele scored on the first shift by choosing to shoot on a two on one with Kyle Connor.

First Period

The game started extremely slowly as both teams struggled to get shots in the early going. It seemed that both sides were content to chip the puck in and not get anything going towards the net. This lasted majority of the period before the game started to pick up at the end of the first. The Jets got a powerplay near the end of the period and the second unit went to work as they moved the puck around and found Laine with a clear lane from the point. It was a great pass across from Pionk and Laine ripped it top corner to open the scoring in this game.
It was mentioned in the game preview that Laine loves to play against Dallas. Hopefully he can keep that momentum up as these teams face each other next week as well.

Second Period

The Jets fell into a bit of a lull in the second period as they couldn’t really get anything going. The passes were slightly off and they couldn’t get any sustained pressure in the offensive end. Dallas took advantage and tied things up early in the second as Pionk was stripped of the puck behind the Jets net. Dickinson worked it out in front to Janmark and he easily put it past Hellebuyck to tie the game at one.
Hellebuyck didn’t have much of a chance on that one as he couldn’t get across the crease in time. Unfortunately, Hellebuyck also didn’t have much of a chance on the second goal as Faksa had a beautiful tip on a point shot and sent the puck into the bottom corner of the net. It was a tough two goals for Hellebuyck who has been playing so well in the last few weeks.

Third Period

After a tough second period, the Jets rebounded in the third by severely out-shooting the Stars in the early part of the period. The Copp, Lowry, Perreault line had been playing excellent all game and they were rewarded in the third period as Copp pounced on a rebound and fired it home to tie the game at two. Lowry picked up an assist and now has a point in two straight games after not registering any points in his first 14 games of the year.
Despite the Jets getting a late powerplay in the final few minutes of the third period, they weren’t able to score the game winner in regulation. The game went to overtime once again which is no surprise for Winnipeg fans. The Jets are getting very comfortable in the extra frame as they lead the league with the most overtime/shootout victories this season.

Overtime

We’ve seen some overtime games that last a long time before someone scores. That wasn’t the case in this one as Scheifele stole the puck in his own end and raced up with ice with Connor on his wing. It was a two on one the entire way down the ice and Scheifele decided to keep the puck and take the shot. It was a smart decision as he rifled it past Khudobin and gave the Jets the victory.

TL;DR Why the Jets Won

The Jets were able to weather the storm in the second period and managed to play a really strong third. The Copp, Lowry, Perreault was great and scored the tying goal in the third period while the overall skill of the team once again gave them the overtime winner. Hellebuyck was good enough to win and the Jets scored when it counted to end the game in overtime.

Jetsnation Top Gun

It’s no surprise to see Andrew Copp at the top of the list for the Top Gun of the game. He was excellent all game long and was rewarded with the tying goal in the third period. He did a great job killing the one penalty Winnipeg took and he was dangerous on the offensive end too as he easily led the game in shots with 8.
