The terrible start from the Jets was their undoing in this game as they fell behind 2-0 in the first half of the opening period. Laughton was able to score both goals to give the Flyers a big cushion for the rest of the game. The Jets had a better second period and eventually brought the score to within one in the third period but the Flyers came back and regained their two goal lead. Morrissey and Laine had the goals for Winnipeg and Hellebuyck was really good but didn’t get much help from his teammates on the goals against. The Jets fail to extend their winning streak as they lose 4-2.

First Period

The Jets haven’t scored the first goal of the game for a few weeks and the trend continued this afternoon. The Flyers managed to get on the board just a few minutes into the game as Laughton found some room off the rush. Provorov took the puck over the line and fed it towards the middle to Laughton streaking towards the net. The shot beat Hellebuyck and the Flyers were up 1-0.
Things didn’t get any easier for the Jets as they took a penalty a few minutes later. Luckily for them, the Flyers took a penalty of their own while on the powerplay which negated the man-advantage.
Winnipeg was a step slow in the first half of the period and it cost them again near the middle of the frame. As Philadelphia’s penalty expired, the Flyers found themselves on a three on one. Laughton took it across the middle and waited for some traffic to form before putting it on net. It went off a skate and trickled into the net as Laughton grabbed his second goal of the period.
Two mistakes by Winnipeg cost them two goals and they were in a hole once again.
Things got a little better as the period went on as the Connor, Copp, Laine line had several strong shifts. Laine ripped one of the post as they generated some chances. It took most of the period, but the Jets started to find their legs near the end of the period. They need to take that momentum into the second period if they want to come back in this game.

Second Period

The Jets were sleepwalking in the first period, but they woke up in the second as they started to get majority of the shots and chances. They threw a ton of pucks at the net, but Hart was able to stop them all. The big problem in the early part of the second period was that Winnipeg was throwing the puck on net from really far away. Hart didn’t need to work too hard to see the puck and was able to make most saves fairly easily.
Later in the period, the Jets made one mistake and it cost them once again. The coverage got confused in front of the net and Couturier was able to sneak free and rifle the puck past Hellebuyck. The Jets missed their coverage on the man and the puck as the Flyers took a 3-0 lead.
With the time nearly gone in the second period, the Jets needed to get something going their way to help mount a comeback. It came from the stick of Morrissey as he unleashed a wicked one-timer over the shoulder of Hart. Scheifele laid it up perfectly as Morrissey came down from the blueline with nobody picking him up. His shot got the Jets on the board and gave them some life heading into the second intermission now down 3-1.

Third Period

Down by two goals, the Jets needed to score an early one to help themselves get back in the game. They got their opportunity early in the period as the Flyers took an penalty. The powerplay went to work to try and get the Jets back in it. Wheeler had the puck as the Jets came over the line and he laid it back to Pionk. Pionk fed the pass across to Laine who absolutely wired it past Hart for the goal. It was a nice passing play and an even better shot as the Jets brought themselves within one goal.
The Flyers came right back with a few good shifts including one where there was at least three or four chances in the crease for Philadelphia. Hellebuyck was down and out but somehow the puck stayed out of the net to keep the Jets within a goal. The Jets ended up taking a penalty on the play but did a wonderful job of killing it off as they didn’t let the Flyers set up.
Things took a turn for the worse after the penalty kill as the Flyers scored again to regain their two goal lead. They won a faceoff back to the point and sent a slapshot towards the net. It went off a body in front of the net and made it’s way past Hellebuyck to give the Flyers the 4-2 lead.
With time running out in the period, the Jets took another penalty which sealed their fate as they fell to the Flyers 4-2.

TL;DR Why the Jets Lost

The Jets weren’t ready to play as the puck was dropped in the first period. They gave the Flyers a 2-0 cushion far too early in the game. After those two goals, the Jets picked it up, but they were never able to recover from those opening minutes. The Jets have had comebacks in three straight games, but that trend was eventually going to come back and hurt them. That’s exactly what happened in this one as they weren’t able to catch up.

Jetsnation Top Gun

With plenty of shots and a wicked one-timer, Patrik Laine is the top gun in this game. The Jets struggled in the first period, but the second line of Connor, Copp, and Laine led the way with a few really strong shifts. Laine turned that effort into a goal in the second period as he brought the team back to within one.

Next Flight

It’s a quick turnaround for the Jets as they make their way to Buffalo later today. They are up against the Sabres tomorrow for a back to back afternoon special as puck drop is at 2:00 PM. After Buffalo, the Jets head into Washinton to take on the Capitals in the first half of a home and home. Jets visit the Capitals on Tuesday while the Caps visit Winnipeg on Thursday.
