The Jets of last year came back to haunt the current year’s team in this one. After scoring a third period goal to take the lead, Winnipeg allowed Boston to score two of their own. In just 33 seconds, the Jets went from winning to losing. All it takes is a few mistakes and it cost the Jets in this one. As for the rest of the game, Winnipeg went toe to toe with the Bruins and had a hard-fought effort while playing their third game in four nights.

The period opened with the Jets having a few really strong shifts from the top line. Scheifele and Laine had a give and go and generated a dangerous chance in the opening minutes of the game. A few minutes later, it was this line that opened the scoring as Connor and Scheifele had a two on one. Connor kept the puck himself and made a really nice move around the defensemen to walk in alone on Halak. He flipped the backhand over the glove and the Jets went up 1-0.

The team traded chances later in the period, but Boston had the best chance as somehow the Jets left the most dangerous scorer in the league wide open in the slot. Morrissey and Poolman both got caught in the corner and Scheifele chased the puck behind the net. With all three players out of the play, it left Pastrnak wide open in the slot. As expected, he easily sent the one-timer into the top corner to tie the game.

One other thing that became apparent during the first period was how quickly Boston tries to turn the puck up the ice. As soon as they generate a turnover, they turn around and fire the puck into neutral ice looking for an outlet pass. They aren’t always connecting, but they did earn a few odd-man rushes with the technique.

With both teams scoring once, the game is tied at one heading into the first intermission.

With the teams tied at one after the first period, it was only a matter of time before somebody broke the deadlock. It was the Jets powerplay the struck first as the second unit got a rare goal. Morrissey and Ehlers worked the puck back and forth at the point and Morrissey let a one-timer go from up top. Copp got his stick on it in front and put the Jets ahead 2-1.

The second period began to turn into a special teams war as the Bruins got their second powerplay of the game. Winnipeg killed off the first one earlier in the period, but they weren’t able to duplicate their success a second time as Boston tied the game up. It came off a lateral pass at the top of the zone. Pastrnak backed himself near the top of the circle and let go a perfect shot that beat Brossoit.

The rest of the period didn’t have too many chances as both teams struggled to get dangerous opportunities on net. This lasted until the final two minutes of the frame when Winnipeg turned the puck over at the offensive blueline. The puck was knocked into the neutral zone and DeBrusk out-raced everyone before beating Brossoit up high to give Boston their first lead of the game.

Special teams continued to be a big story as Winnipeg was back on the powerplay to end the period. This time it was the first unit that got the goal as Pionk’s point shot made it’s way through everything and into the back of the net.

With the flurry of goals near the end of the period, these two teams are once again tied heading into the intermission. This time around it was 3-3 as the game headed to the third period.

The Jets came out in the third period in the exact same way they came out in the second; by scoring the go-ahead goal relatively early in the frame. This time it was Mark Scheifele who put the Jets on top as he banked a shot off Halak and into the net from behind the goal line.

Things were running smoothly with the team only ten minutes away from picking up a third straight victory until the Jets pulled a classic move out of their hat. They paid the price for a horrendous line change for the second time in the game as Pastrnak potted his third goal of the game.

Not only did Winnipeg have to watch all of the hats fall to the ice, but they also watched themselves get scored on for the second time in under a minute as DeBrusk scored to give Boston the 5-4 lead. That goal held up as the winner as Winnipeg leaves Boston with a sour taste in their mouth.

It was very simple why Winnipeg lost this game. After having the lead in the third period, they gave up two goals in 33 seconds to fall behind. Those two goals were the difference in an otherwise even game between the teams.

With a goal and assist in this game, Mark Scheifele is the top gun. The top line had plenty of chances throughout the game, but the real reason why Scheifele gets the award because of the way he scored his goal. Not only did he score, but he did so from behind Boston’s net. It was a great play that not many players would think of doing. Scheifele’s keen awareness was on full display with that marker.

Winnipeg’s next flight is booked for later tonight as they fly home after a busy four game road trip. They get Friday off to rest and recuperate before hitting the ice for practice on Saturday. That’s to prepare for their Sunday afternoon game against the Predators. Puck drop is at 1:00 PM and you can catch the action on TSN 3.
