It was really a tale of two games. The first half was owned by Dallas as they got off to a strong start in both the first and second periods. The game started to flip near the end of the second and the Jets came storming back in the third as Wheeler got things going. The Jets dominated the rest of the third period before Scheifele tied the game with under a minute to go in the game. The domination ran out in overtime as Morrissey took a penalty and Pavelski scored the game winner to give Dallas the victory.

First Period

The intensity was high from the beginning as Dallas was much more prepared for this game. They got off to a much better start and controlled most of the play in the first period. The Jets had difficulties clearing the puck and getting through neutral ice with speed. Dallas was able to create turnovers and generate a number of dangerous rushes. None were more dangerous than the puck getting past Bitetto and Hellebuyck getting caught out of position. Bitetto had to dive into the crease and was able to prevent the puck from going in by mere inches.
Shortly after the mayhem in Winnipeg’s crease, Laine took a penalty and the Stars were able to score on the man advantage. It was Jamie Benn who shot it past a screened Hellebuyck and the Stars took a 1-0 lead.

Second Period

The second period followed a similar path to the first period. Dallas generated decent chances and the Jets couldn’t really get anything going. Winnipeg had their first powerplay of the game, but they weren’t able to score as the Stars were repeatedly able to clear the zone.
Midway through the period, Dallas doubled their lead off a rush by Gurianov. He beat Hellebuyck from a bad angle as it went off the far post and into the back of the net.
Things went from bad to worse as Scheifele took a double minor shortly after the Dallas goal. He got called for a hook on Benn, but also got an additional two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct as he argued about the call. Luckily, the Jets were able to kill off both penalties with some really good work on the penalty kill.
The Jets went back on the man-advantage late in the second period, but once again, they were unable to score and the Jets went into the intermission down by two goals.

Third Period

The Jets needed a quick start in the third period and that’s exactly what happened as Blake Wheeler scored in the opening few minutes. It was a weird goal that somehow got through Bishop and dribbled into the net.
It doesn’t matter how it goes in, as long as it crosses the line. In this case, the goal counts and the Jets were within one.
The Jets absolutely dominated the rest of the period as they continued searching for the elusive tying goal. They carried all of the play and spent almost all of the period in Dallas’ end.
As the minutes wore down, the Jets were still down by a goal. They pulled Hellebuyck with two minutes left and went on the hunt for the tying goal.
They spent almost two full shifts in Dallas’ end before Scheifele played the hero by scoring the tying goal in the final minute of the game. Everyone on the ice got sucked into a puck battle in the corner except for Scheifele who was left all along in the slot. Laine found him wide open and Scheifele snapped it past Bishop to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Overtime

Overtime didn’t go as planned as Josh Morrissey took a penalty in the first two minutes of the extra frame. Dallas scored on the ensuing man advantage and took the extra point as Pavelski scored the winner.

Jetsnation Top Gun

With the all important tying goal, Mark Scheifele is your Top Gun tonight. Other than the double minor in the second period, Scheifele played an excellent game and generated a number of scoring chances with his linemates.

Next Flight

It was a quick one game road trip as the Jets fly all the way back home to Winnipeg after this game. They get a few days off at home before taking on Anaheim on Sunday at Bell MTS Place. The Jets will play another home game against the Red Wings on Tuesday before finishing the home and home in Detroit next Thursday.
