JNGD.S8G5 Instant Recap: Brossoit Steals the Show

5 years agoThe Winnipeg Jets beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 in an exciting game featuring great chances and even better saves.
The Jets rode on the back of Laurent Brossoit who finished with 42 saves on 43 shots for a sparkling .977 SV%. It was a low-scoring game despite each team getting plenty of chances including breakaways for both teams.
First Period
The Carolina Hurricanes were coming off a back-to-back where they played in Minnesota last night. While sometimes playing two days in a row can hinder a teams energy, Carolina got off to a hot start. They were all over Winnipeg from the beginning of the game and the Jets were caught off-guard during the first period.
Even though Carolina was generating most of the chances, Laurent Brossoit played great and kept the game scoreless. The rest of the team didn’t offer much help as they continually turned the puck over including a bad giveaway which led to an Aho breakaway.
Second Period
The Jets started to find their legs in the second period as they created plenty of chances. This time it was Mrazek who stopped everything that went his way including a 2-0 breakaway with BFF’s Ehlers and Laine.
This breakaway was the perfect chance for Ehlers to finally get out of his scoring slump until Mrazek came sliding across to make a highlight reel save.
The Jets also had a few odd-man rushes as the Hurricanes put so much pressure on the forecheck because their defensmen were pinching. Once the Jets get past the first defender there is some open space to be had.
Brossoit continued to look great even though the Jets still didn’t offer any help as they repeatedly turned the puck over in their own end. At least no damage was done and the game was still locked at 0 despite both teams getting their own chances.
Third Period
The goals finally came pouring in during the third period as the Jets struck first. Wheeler made a great pass across on the powerplay to a wide open Laine. Laine made no mistake as he snapped into the empty net.
Carolina pushed back and managed to score the equalizer just minutes later. From there it was a tight checking finish as both teams traded chances.
With just over two minutes left it was Morrissey who made a great rush as the Hurricanes were making a line change. He found Little streaking through the middle of the ice who snapped home the game winner. Kyle Connor added the empty net goal as the Jets got off to a great start to their six game homesetand.
Talking Points
- Everyone knew the defense might struggle without Byfuglien in the lineup. Being Kulikov’s first game, he looked a little bit rusty and had a few bad reads in the early going. Beyond that, the defense struggled to get the puck out of their own end as they committed plenty of turnovers throughout the whole game.
- Little, Ehlers, Laine looked good together and generated quite a few chances including a 2-0 breakaway, and the game winner.
- With Byfuglien out, Morrissey got a look on the top powerplay unit. This gives an interesting dynamic as it allows the one timer from the other side of the ice. Perhaps this is a change that would help the powerplay get a different look?
- Brossoit played fantastic as he stopped 42 shots and looked sharp all game. He stayed square to the shots and made several positional saves despite being screened in front. It was a great showing for Brossoit who was one of the largest question marks heading into the season.
