The Winnipeg Jets downed the Chicago Blackhawks in a dramatic overtime victory. The Jets got scored on first, but managed to regain the lead by the end of the first period. They went up by a goal in the second, but Chicago was able to score a tying goal in the third period with the goalie pulled. The game went to overtime and it was Kevin Hayes who played the hero. He made a nice move in tight and was able to flip the puck over Crawford’s pad for the game winning goal.

First Period

It’s no secret the Jets have been struggling over the past few games. Now on a four game road trip, they came out with a decent start. The opening shifts had Winnipeg controlling most of the play until they took the first penalty. Perreault was called for holding and the Blackhawks had the first chance of the game. They made Winnipeg pay as Toews opened the scoring as his shot got deflected past Hellebuyck.
It definitely wasn’t the start that Winnipeg was hoping for, but they were able to tie the game a few minutes later as Adam Lowry continued his hot streak. He sniped one past Crawford as the Jets came across the blueline with speed.
The Jets had a powerplay of their own later in the first period but they weren’t able to convert. It wasn’t the best looking powerplay as they were barely able to get set up.
Luckily, the fourth line came through at the end of the period as Roslovic threw the puck towards the front of the net. It took a friendly bounce and rebounded past Crawford to give the Jets a one goal lead heading into the second period.

Second Period

The second period began with a flurry of activity as Scheifele was hooked on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. He tried to go five hole, but wasn’t able to convert as Crawford shut the door.
Moments later the Blackhawks took a penalty and the Jets had their second powerplay of the game. It was even worse than the first one as they allowed two odd man rushes against and then took their own penalty. Nobody scored during the four on four action, but the fourth line struck again shortly after that. Roslovic scored his second of the night on a beautiful shot from the middle of the ice.
The breathing room didn’t last long as the Jets allowed a goal against just over a minute later. Beaulieu lost his footing on a simple dump in and Strome was able to walk in un-touched.
The Jets were called for another penalty late in the period and they will headed into the third on the penalty kill but up by a goal.

Third Period

The Jets managed to kill the penalty at the start of the period before getting a few chances at the other end. The fourth line continued to have an excellent game as Copp had a good chance in Chicago’s end. Chicago ended up having the best opportunity however, as they had a wide open net on a rebound. Somehow the puck stayed out as it went sailing through the crease.
As the period unfolded, the Jets managed to score their fourth goal of the game which appeared to seal the win. Unfortunately, on further review, the play was off-side and Scheifele’s goal was called back.
That was the turning point as the Blackhawks used the momentum to score the tying goal with Crawford pulled for the extra attacker. Strome got loose in front of the net and buried the goal to send the game to overtime.

Overtime

The Blackhawks had good pressure on the first shift before Laine was sprung on a breakaway by Wheeler. Crawford shut the door as he made a nice glove save. The teams traded chances before Hayes made a great power move and was able to lift it over the pad of Crawford for the game winner.

Talking Points

The Jets powerplay was really bad throughout this game. They struggled at keeping the puck in the zone and couldn’t seem to get set up off the rush. Byfuglien needs to get back on the number one unit ASAP and remove Trouba from that spot. Byfuglien’s passing and shooting ability makes him a much better option going forward.
The fourth line was fantastic in this game as they were the most dangerous trio throughout the night. Copp was great on the forecheck, Roslovic was able to score a couple goals, and Perreault was always in the right spot as they played most of the night in the offensive end.
Byfuglien looked much more comfortable in his second game back. The cardio will likely be an issue for a little while but he was jumping in the rush and making good plays. His emotion on the ice will help spark the team as well.
