The Winnipeg Jets beat the Boston Bruins by 4-3 margin as Scheifele, Wheeler, and Laine all had multiple points. These three connected on the first two goals as the Jets took an early lead. The Bruins fought back and tied the game before the Jets scored two more in the third to regain their lead. Boston added one late but couldn’t score with the empty net as the Jets won a close game against the Bruins.

It’s no secret that Blake Wheeler has been a scoring machine over the past few weeks. He’s been the hottest Jet as of late and he kept it rolling in the opening moments of this game. Ben Chiarot made a great defensive play on a Bruins two on one and sent Scheifele back the other way. Scheifele made a nice pass across to Laine who blasted it on net. Rask made the first save but Wheeler batted it into the empty net to score the opening goal of the game.

The teams swapped powerplays after the first goal as Scheifele got called for hooking and Acciari got called for holding midway through the period. While the Bruins didn’t score on the man-advantage, the Jets did as Scheifele tapped home a beautiful backdoor pass from Laine to increase the lead to two.

For the most part, the Jets were playing excellent defense without allowing many opportunities against. The zone exits were clean and seemed to be working effectively. The defense was going well until late in the period when the Jets turned the puck over and McAvoy capitalized. He sniped one past Hellebuyck to put the Bruins on the board.

Heading into the first intermission, it’s a 2-1 game for Winnipeg. It was a strong period for the Jets as they seemed to control much of the play.

The game took a defensive turn in the second period as both teams tightened up in their own zone. There weren’t many chances for either team but the Jets still seemed to carry the play and get more opportunities than the Bruins. Unfortunately, even though the Jets were playing well defensively, one bad play is all it took for the Bruins to tie it. It was a scrum in front of the net as multiple Bruins were causing havoc in the crease before Nordstrom was able to knock it in and tie the game.

The Jets had a chance to regain their lead with a powerplay late in the period, but they weren’t able to capitalize despite Laine showing some impressive dangles off the rush. In the end, Laine hit two posts on the same powerplay but couldn’t find the back of the net.

The tide started to turn in the third period as the Bruins came out with some momentum. They were generating more chances than the Jets, but like we saw earlier, all it takes is one mistake to allow a goal. This happened as the Jets came from a defensive zone draw and worked their way down the ice. It became a three on two as Trouba joined the rush over the blue line. Scheifele fed Trouba towards the net and Trouba shoveled it past Rask for the go-ahead goal.

The momentum seemed to go back in Winnipeg’s favour after the go ahead goal as the Jets continued to press. The second line got in hard on the forecheck and created a turnover right in front of Rask. The puck squirted to Ehlers who snapped it home to take a 4-2 lead.

In true Jets fashion, they couldn’t win easily as they allowed the Bruins to score with three minutes left.

This gave the Bruins a chance to pull their goalie in the dying moments to try and get the tying goal. The Jets weren’t able to get the empty net goal, but at least they didn’t allow one in the final seconds as they closed out the game with a win.

Patrik Laine is turning into a playmaker. Although everyone knows about Laine’s scoring ability, his playmaking skills have really been showcased since moving to the top line. Laine’s overall game continues to improve which is a great thing for the Jets moving forward.

Maybe the biggest talking point in this game was the incredible stick lift by Chara on Scheifele in the first period. Scheifele was in the middle of the ice on the powerplay when Chara walked in and literally threw his stick to the rafters. While Scheifele was mad there wasn’t a penalty, it was a comical play, especially because of how high the stick flew.
