JN Flight Plan #62: Winnipeg Jets @ Ottawa Senators

After wrapping up the six game homestand with a win against the Kings on Tuesday, the Jets head into Ottawa to kick off a four game road trip. The Jets will be leaving town with one more player than they came in with as recently acquired Dylan Demelo has been waiting for his new team to arrive in the nation’s capital. He will likely get his first game action tonight and it comes against the team he was with all year long. It will be a fitting send off for Demelo who will play one more game in Ottawa’s rink this year, although this time it’s for the other team.

Last Senators Game

The Senators found themselves down by two goals in the first period before ripping off four straight goals in the second half of the period. They were up 4-2 after the first after a wild period of action. The Sens added a few more en route to a 7-4 victory.

Fun Senators Fact…

  • Senators’ defensmen Ron Hainsey is serving as an alternate captain this season in Ottawa. That honour with Ottawa means that he’s now been an alternate captain for three different NHL teams. The other two are the Carolina Hurricans and the Atlanta Thrashers.
  •  The Senators currently lead the NHL in shorthanded goals with 14. This was quite the jump from the prior year as they only tallied four shorthanded goals last season. The damage has mainly been done by Namestnikov and Tierney who have four goals each while down a man.

What They’re Saying…

“Dylan DeMelo is easily a Top-3 defenceman on this team; putting aside the seemingly obvious fact that he should have been re-signed, a third round pick is a return that has become embarrassingly inadequate by comparison.”

Last Jets Game

Much like the Senators, the Jets found themselves in an early hole in their last game. The two games actually played out similarly as Winnipeg scored three straight in the second period to take the lead. Even though the Kings scored twice in the third, Winnipeg was able to come away with two points in the standings and move ever closer to the coveted wildcard spot.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • With his 20th goal of the season against LA, Blake Wheeler has now eclipsed 20 goals for seven straight seasons. He trailers only Ilya Kovalchuk (who has eight) for the most in franchise history.
  • Wheeler’s 20th goal also gives Winnipeg five players with over 20 goals this season. Wheeler joins Ehlers, Scheifele, Laine, and Connor as players above that line. Winnipeg is now the only team in the NHL with five players who have scored at least 20 goals.
  • After setting new career highs in both goals and points this year, Jack Roslovic has been heating up lately. He’s scored an impressive eight points in his last nine games and the third line has looked really strong since coming together two games ago.

What We’re Saying…

“There are no “easy” games in the NHL – especially when it comes to games involving these Winnipeg Jets – but falling behind early in games to the likes of Chicago and Los Angeles doesn’t bode well for the overall outlook of the Jets even if all three games ended up being victories.”
