The specter of the Winnipeg Jets possibly missing two top-end forwards likely means fading them on the moneyline and hoping for value in the totals area.
The Jets are the +135 underdog while the Calgary Flames are a -155 favorite with a 5.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Monday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Jets are 4-8 in their last 12 games as an underdog of +120 or more, according to the OddsShark NHL Database, and the Flames are 7-3 in their last 10 matchups when favored by -140 or deeper into minus money. The total went OVER in the last four games from that sample.

Calgary leads 1-0 in the best-of-five qualifying series and the Jets suffered major losses long before the final buzzer sounded in last Saturday’s opener. First, No. 1 center Mark Scheifele suffered a left-leg injury on his third shift and needed to be helped off the ice. Right wing Patrik Laine also suffered a left hand/wrist injury in the third period and might be a game-time decision.
The Flames went on to win 4-1. It was the 11th time in the teams’ last 14 matchups that the total finished UNDER at sports betting sites.
During Game 1, the Flames, bolstered by a strong two-way presence from the likes of Elias Lindholm, Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk during Game 1, showed they are committed to sacrificing offensive flair to make safe plays once a lead is established. That could have an effect on the total. Calgary has also been strong in the front end of back-to-back games over the last two seasons, going 12-6 in their last 18 games when they were also scheduled to play the following day. For one game at least, Calgary had the special teams edge, going 2-for-4 on the power play while holding the Jets to 0-for-7 with a shorthanded goal against.
Calgary’s Cam Talbot stopped 17 of 18 shots in Game 1, and should likely get another start.
The Jets are 10-7 in their last 17 front-end matchups, but typically they went into such matchups with at least one of Scheifele and Laine fit to play. Laine, who was injured after a heavy check from Calgary defenseman Marc Giordano with just over 14 minutes to play, was also the only Jet with more than two shots on goal in Saturday’s contest. Line juggling in the playoffs is tricky, but right wing Blake Wheeler might slide into his injured linemate’s center spot and young forward Jansen Harkins might also be called upon in hopes of kick-starting the offense. In any event, the Jets could be hard-pressed to generate significant zone time against a Calgary defense corps led by Giordano and Rasmus Andersson.
Connor Hellebuyck, a Vezina Trophy finalist, stopped 29 of 32 Flames shots on Saturday. That included a perfect 19-of-19 at even strength.
