Jets Nation Recap: Jets Win Rematch With Stars

7 years agoThings got off to a rockin’ start with Myers smashing one past Niemi 15 seconds into he game (Armia was eventually credited with am assist). Playing with the lead looked quite a bit better than playing from behind and a quicker-to-the-puck Jets team seemed to be winning all the battles through the first period. The power play look a lot better, with one man-advantage registering 8 shots but no goals. Kyle Connor scored his first of the season on another slick set-up from Nikolaj Ehlers to put the Jets up 2-0.
The second period was more of the same from the Jets as they just looked faster than the Stars. Laine put a laser of wrist shot in the far top corner 8 seconds into a power-play and gave a little stick spin to celebrate and the Jets were ahead 3-0 and never really looked back. Seguin scored a power play goal (high glove on Hellebuyck again) in the early moments of the third but the Stars didn’t really threaten after that. Laine blasted another pure sniper’s goal to tie him for the league lead with Auston Matthews at 6 goals apiece. Down 4-1, the Stars were pulling their goalie while on the power-play with five minutes left, but their desperation didn’t pay off.
GAME NOTES:
- After watching from the press box last night, and mentioning in his between-periods interview that he paid close attention to Benn and Seguin, Kyle Connor got his first NHL goal and looked quite pleased about it. Nikolaj Ehlers also seem pretty happy for him. Good to get that one under his belt.
- The Jets power-play looked a bit tonight, going 2 for 7, but getting some high quality chances. Patrik Laine makes things pretty exciting each time there’s a man-advantage.
- Antoine Roussel was his typical self in the third with what looked suspiciously like a slewfoot on Dustin Byfuglien, which left the big man down in a heap and sent him back to the dressing room for a short while. The Department of Player Safety might be taking a closer look at that one. Big #33 came back a few minutes later and seemed to be ok.
- Joel Armia looked especially good again, as he seems to every night that they let him play. Pick-pocketing players left and and right and very effective on the forecheck. I don’t think he will be seeing much of the pressbox any more.
- Connor Hellebuyck was square and solid all night stopping 38 shots. That’s what we’ve been waiting to see. He’ll probably be up against the Sabres again on Sunday afternoon; let’s hope we can see it again.
