Jets Nation Recap: Jets Look Good in 2-0 Shutout of Flames

Connor Hellebuyck recorded his third shutout of the year and the Jets looked good (both on the ice and in their sweet Heritage alternates) as they continued their strong play of late (let’s just pretend the third period in Buffalo didn’t exist, k?). A first period goal on a strong individual effort from Dustin Byfuglien and a third period turnover by TJ Brodie right to Blake Wheeler in the third and they Jets grab 2 valuable points from a wildcard rival.
The 2-0 win for the Jets brings them back up to fake-.500 at 19-19-3 and evens the season series with the Flames. Drew Stafford filled in for Patrik Laine who is out with a concussion and made a few nice plays and assisted on Byfuglien’s goal. The power play went 0-3 but the penalty kill was 3-3 in what was a close-fought, hard-hitting affair.

Game notes:

  • Jets fans were holding their breath early as Garnet Hathaway sent Nikolaj Ehlers to the ice awkwardly behind his own net and he was a bit slow to get up. Chris Thorburn jumped on the ice to speak with Mr. Hathaway, who politely declined his invitation to dance. At which point Ben Chiarot gave Hathaway an undetected cross-check to the chest. The Jets looked a little touchy with a hobbled young star. Wonder why that was?
  • Connor Hellebuyck looked solid in the net again, stopping all 28 shots he faced. That’s Hellebuyck’s third shutout of the season and the fifth of his short career. His play has gotten better as the calendar has turned; let’s hope he’s ready to take the next step.
  • Nikolaj Ehlers got the second assist on Byfuglien’s goal, extending his point streak to five games.
  • Surprise guest appearance at the MTSC:Wrestlemania Main Event is set!
